Iomega SuperHero Dock Records Contacts and Images While Charging Your iDevice

At first glance, the lengthy named Iomega SuperHero Dock Backup and Charger is a regular charging station for your iDevice.

A closer inspection of the stylish metal dock reveals its true purpose – it’s an automated backup system that works in conjunction with the companion and free of charge SuperHero iPhone Backup app to record important device data, such as photos and camera roll images, to an SD card every time you charge.

After the initial backup takes place, future backups only include incremental contacts and photos. The companion app also allows you to restore your iDevice from contacts and photos backed up on your SD card.

The accessory comes with an included 4GB SD card that you can replace with a more spacious storage.

The SuperHero iPhone Backup app utilizes accessories access, a new feature unveiled in iOS 4 that lets third-party developers write apps that talk to various accessories like this one via the iPhone’s 40-pin dock connector.

This, unfortunately, means that the backup app cannot suck other important items onto external storage because some data types are still off limit to third-party apps. What data types, you ask…

Well, the stuff like installed apps, music, text messages, emails or email account settings. That being said, iTunes is still the only solution for the full and complete iDevice backups. Iomega’s SuperHero should come in handy when you need to perform quick backups, but don’t count on it replacing desktop sync entirely.

The Iomega SuperHero Dock Backup and Charger will set you back $70. It comes with a three-year limited warranty and works with the iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4, in addition to the third- and fourth-generation iPod touch.
