Despite the fact that one in seventeen people now have a Facebook profile, the social networking site still has a long way to go before it becomes kinda phone book for planet Earth, if you will. And what do those uninitiated souls think about Facebook? According to a Wedbush Securities survey of 2,500 people over the age of 18, the number one reason why those outside the Facebook fold haven’t yet jumped on the bandwagon is simple – they view the site as a waste of time. More precisely, more than a half (52 percent) respondents polled last September provided that answer, while 48 percent cited privacy concerns.
One in four, or 25 percent, said they lacked spare time and 11 percent aren’t familiar with Facebook. The same percentage said they weren’t on Facebook because they didn’t know how to use it. Interestingly, those percentages grew higher when Wedbush Securities conducted the same poll a month later, in October of last year.
Despite many surveys revealing users’ irritation with the Facebook phenomenon, many people are unwillingly singing up because they are sick and tired of having to respond to questions like "What do you mean you don’t have a Facebook profile?" However, the fact remains that most people avoid Facebook despite its popularity.
Part of it may be bad press and some of the resentment could be attributed to the less-than-stellar portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network movie and ongoing litigation involving the Winkevoss twins, Zuckerberg’s former classmates. Facebook recently rolled out new-look profiles and is now reportedly forcing the redesign upon all its users.
