Sapphire Unveils Its First AMD Fusion mini-ITX Motherboard

Sapphire’s upcoming motherboard is based on AMD’s latest Brazos platform, which is part of the AMD Ultrathin Platform.

The Brazos platform is meant for ultra-small form factor devices, such as nettops. Anshel Sag, our West Coast Editor, recently explained Brazos in greater detail.

In a nutshell, Brazos packs in the Hudson chipset and the 40nm Ontario APU (APU, as in Accelerated Processing Unit).

It fully supports DirectX11 and claims a total power draw of 9W for netbooks and small form factor desktops and devices. For comparison, the Zacate platform has a power draw of 18W for desktops, all-in-ones, and ultrathin/mainstream notebooks.

Brazos competes with similar low-voltage system-on-a-chip solutions based on Intel’s Atom and Nvidio’s ION platforms. It’s a third platform consumers can now choose from.

Graphics card maker Sapphire on Thursday announced its first mini-ITX motherboard (170 x 170mm) engineered around the Brazos platform.

Dubbed the Sapphire Pure White Fusion E350M1W, the motherboard uses the E350 Zacate APU that packs in an AMD 1.6GHz dual-core E350 Zacate processor and a Radeon HD 6310 GPU on a single die.

Two DDR3 memory slots supporting 800MHz and 1066MHz memory modules allow you to equip the motherboard with 4GB RAM tops, which should be fine for most usage scenarios.

It also sports a PCI Express 2.0 slot so you can, should you need, upgrade the graphics.

The motherboard will be available soon, Sapphire said.

No pricing information was known at press time.
