Sony Ericsson Preps a Dual-Core Smartphone: Xperia Duo

The company experienced a great first quarter of 2011, achieving sales equal to six months of 2010 and is keen on beating sales for the whole 2010 by July 1st. In order to keep the momentum going, Sony Ericsson cannot rely just on single-core phones while all the competitors are preparing dual-core, with some even gearing for quad-core processors this year.

Thus, it was no surprise to us when Chinese forum Mobibal came out with the forum post featuring Xperia duo posing next to Xperia arc. While we do not have the information on the hardware side of things, it is visible that the screen is larger – expect to see a 4.5" multi-touch screen. As far as ergonomics go, we compare the front of this phone somewhere between Xperia arc and HTC Sensation, while the backside is comparable to Xperia arc – all nicely curved to provide better grip in hand.

Given the icon size between Xperia arc and Xperia duo, there is a strong possibility that the screen will feature the same resolution as the smaller 4.0 and 4.2" displays, the ubiquitous 854×480 pixels.

As far as the processing power goes, given that Sony Ericsson is a faithful customer of Qualcomm we would not be surprised to see the current MSM8255 Snapdragon (1GHz Scorpion core) simply replaced with MSM8660 (up to 1.5GHz Krait core).

Given the new Android upgrade policy, this phone will be upgradeable to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and all 4.x revisions over the course of 18 months after the product release.

The Xperia duo will come to market in the fourth quarter of this year, pitching itself against Apple iPhone 4S (long rumored "iPhone 5"), Samsung Galaxy S II, LG Optimus X2, HTC Sensation/4G and many more.
