Seagate Launches 4TB USB 3.0 External GoFlex Drive

Seagate has been on the cutting edge of hard drive technology since back in 1979 when the company was founded. Today, Seagate continues to innovate with the announcement of their 4TB external USB 3.0 hard drive part of the FreeAgent GoFlex line of products.

Seagate 4TB GoFlex USB 3.0 DriveFor those unfamiliar with Seagate?s GoFlex line of hard drives, these drives consist of two components. The top part (with the drive in it) and the bottom part (with the power and I/O). GoFlex enables you to swap out the bottom part for different interfaces which means you can buy one drive and with additional docks you can allow it to do USB 2.0, USB 3.0, Firewire 800, and Gigabit Ethernet.

This new 4TB addition to the FreeAgent, GoFlex Desk line of external hard drives only currently comes in USB 3.0 as it would be foolish to try to fill a 4TB with anything less.

Hopefully Seagate will create a Thunderbolt or LightPeak attachment for this drive as we can imagine many Apple or Sony users would love to have a 4TB drive connected at extremely high speed.

There will be a GoFlex Desk for Macs with USB 2.0 and Firewire 800 also available by the end of the month, but for real speed we believe that Seagate needs to consider Thunderbolt/Light Peak. Although the current version will already work with both Macs and PCs as it is already but will lack the Firewire 800 connectivity until the Mac version comes out. You can always purchase this version now and purchase the Firewire Dock later if you want it now and don?t feel like waiting for the Mac version.

The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 4TB (forgive us for the extremely long name) also comes with Seagate?s Dashboard management tool for easy management of backup schedules and file encryption. The FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 4TB comes with 192-bit Triple DES encryption which creates a good level of consumer level protection for personal data.

The FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 4TB is currently available at Seagate?s website and will retail for $249.99 at retailers and etailers over the coming month.
