e-con Systems is an embedded design services company that specializes in developing advanced camera solutions. At ESC 2012, they announced a Stereo Vision camera reference design based on Texas Instruments? OMAP/DM37x family of processors and Gumstix Overo computer-on-module (COM) series.
Called Capella, the reference design comes with a Software Development Kit that helps companies create their own Stereo Vision Camera based application. They include sample applications with source for synchronous stereo-image capture, depth measurement and more. A company video gives and overview of Capella.

Customers can integrate Stereo Vision into their product design for mobile robotics obstacle detection or for computer-aided navigation and driver guidance in an automobile or for reconstructing 3D details of sculptures or even human faces.

The Stereo Camera Reference design includes a DM3730-based Gumstix Overo WaterStorm COM, a Gumstix Tobi expansion board and e-con?s camera daughter board e-CAM_9V024_STEREO.
"Capella allows customers to implement traditional stereo camera applications such as disparity mapping, human tracking and gesture detection by implementing their own algorithms on top of our Stereo Camera reference design," according to Mr. Ashok Babu, President, e-con Systems.

e-con?s e-CAM solutions provide a daughter board that has a camera module. It supports 1.3M, 3M and 5M pixel camera modules and flash for low light. It plugs into several development boards, interfacing with high speed cameras on OMAP, 35x, AM/DM37x PXA27x and others. Customers can license the design with schematics, BOM and source code for Windows CE, Windows Mobile, Linux and Android drivers.

One camera daughter card e-CAMNT_35x_GSTIX is for customers using NTSC cameras with Gumstix Overo, such as those trying to connect a Sony CCD camera or other NTSC cameras with Gumstix Overo. Other examples of NTSC camera use are surveillance and long distance cameras and endoscopy which still use only NTSC cameras.

e-con is a well rounded product/service company. Their offerings include camera driver development, USB camera modules and CMOS camera modules. The prototype follows with testing, certification and production set up. They estimate a typical product development cycle as being from 6 months to 1 year.
