Sony Computer Entertainment Acquires Gaikai

Sony Computer Entertainment acquires Gaikai, thereby providing the platform for Sony to create cloud-based digital gaming, most likely for Sony’s Playstation brand. Gaikai founder and CEO Dave Perry denied such a deal would take place less than a month ago, but things appear to have changed since then. Sony is purchasing Gaikai for $380 million, which is an incredible win for NVIDIA, who heavily invested in Gaikai and has been a major partner thus far. This is the first time a major gaming company has made serious strides into cloud gaming. Sony Computer Entertainment is one of the three largest console manufactures, which also include Microsoft and Nintendo. We would not be surprised to see one of the other two companies either create a competing cloud gaming service of their own, or purchase one of Gaikai’s competitors, such as OnLive.

The press release for the acquisition is below the break.
