Nvidia: PCs Will Always Beat Consoles

While AMD is powering both of the most prominent next-gen consoles (Xbox One and PlayStation 4), Nvidia wanted to step in and say why PC gaming will never lag behind. In an interview with PC PowerPlay, Australia?s gaming magazine, Nvidia?s Senior VP of Content and Technology Tony Tamasi detailed the vision and possible impact consoles might have on the PC world.

Curiously enough, Tamasi believes that while there was an era where console graphics were generally better, it can?t happen again. Things started to turn by the time of the Xbox 360 and PS3, and today the situation is completely different. He also emphasized that Nvidia spends $1.5 billion per year on research and development, and during a lifecycle of a console, they will spend over $10 billion into graphics research.

?The most efficient architectures are from NVIDIA and AMD, and you?re not going to get anything that is significantly more power efficient in a console, as it?s using the same core technology. Yet the consoles have power budgets of only 200 or 300 Watts, so they can put them in the living room, using small fans for cooling, yet run quietly and cool. (?) There?s no way a 200W Xbox is going to beat a 1000W PC,? Tony Tamasi said to the PC PowerPlay.

Tamasi is certain that the PC graphics industry wasn?t ?operating at the limits? during the era of PS3 and Xbox 360, which enabled consoles to still be on par with high-end personal computers. Nowadays, things have changed, and PC GPU world had a very successful liftoff, according to the Nvidia’s man. He concluded the interview by saying that optimizations developers spend for consoles will generally benefit the PC world as well ? as ?they are basically doing PC architecture optimization.?
