Shares are down to $500 ($700 last year), and expectations set by both media and analysts are incredibly high. iPhone 5C photo – Sonny Dickson Without going into much detail on the 5C/5S saga as virtually anything from Apple is possible

First Windows Phone Phablet Appears in a Press Photo

image_3374_8767

Just as the earlier leaks have suggested, the Nokia ?Bandit? seems to carry the name Lumia 1520 in its final form, as Twitter handle @evleaks posted the first press image of how the phablet looks like. Judging by the third column of Live Tiles on the screen, the unit is most definitely running the next version of Windows Phone (GDR3) which, among other things, brings the support for 1080p screens, new SoCs from Qualcomm, etc. Overall design of the unit seems to be following the lines of some earlier Lumia models, and it remains to be seen how that shape actually holds up in what

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer Decides to Retire

image_3348_8741

In an entirely unexpected move, Steve Ballmer just announced that he will retire at some point in the following 12 months. Until the process of choosing the successor ends, he will continue to work and operate as a CEO continuing the plan with the transformation of Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) to a ?devices and services? company. Many believed Steve Ballmer will stick with the company all the way until 2018, and that did not sit particularly well with analysts and, more importantly, with the Wall Street. As Ballmer himself admitted, ?My original thoughts on timing would have had my retirement happen in the middle of our

HTC Coming to Sense(es), Beats Wants to Go

image_3341_8734

HTC Corp. (TPE:2498) is a long way from recovery. Recently they warned that they are likely going to make an operating loss in the third quarter, with expectations for its operating margin to go down between zero and -8 percent on revenues between $1.67 billion and $2 billion. First reported at the very end of July, HTC acknowledged that they are going to focus on mid-range devices as well, in order to gain traction in a ?quite competitive market?, as CEO Peter Chou put it. That is exactly what is going on, but the company is far from putting all of its chances in a

Google Blocks the YouTube app for Windows Phone. Again.

image_3337_8730

Windows Phone platform is having severe issues when it comes to filling up the ecosystem bar with even the most basic applications such as YouTube. The circle goes complete with developers needing the platform to get more users in order to be interesting enough for development, and on the other side there are users who won?t purchase WP-based devices since a number of quality apps are missing. With that old story told once again ? it is worth saying that the store is having more and more higher ranked titles? The store even had a Microsoft-developed YouTube app, after Google officially decided not to support

For Samsung, Flip Phones Aren?t Dead, They are Smart

image_3331_8724

Era of flip phones is long gone, but Samsung has taken yet another approach. Smartphone approach. With that said, it is not the first time the company has packed a smartphone in a clamshell case. Samsung SCH-W999 was a unit launched in late 2011 but never saw the global variant once it launched on China Telecom. It was a phone with dual 3.5-inch 480×800 S-AMOLED panels, 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon (S3) MSM8660 and Android 2.3 with TouchWiz interface. Aside from the dual screen panels, there was a dual SIM slot and dual-mode connectivity (GSM and CDMA2000). Now, Samsung China has unveiled the Hennessy (SCH-W789), a ?new

ARM World Extends ? ZTE Reportedly Working on Their Own Chip

image_3327_8720

According to the Korean site ETNEWS and Chinese C114, ZTE plans on unveiling their own chip solution with integrated 4G LTE in September, during the PT/Expo Comm China 2013. This way, the company plans on joining the likes of Huawei, Samsung and Apple with their in-house solutions and strategy ? but will it/does it matter? Not many have been successful at all with the strategy (aside from Apple) ? take note of the Samsung, where 90% of their flagship Galaxy S4 units are powered not by Exynos, but with Qualcomm?s SoC. Competition among chip manufacturers certainly rises, with Huawei reportedly ending their development of the

Microsoft and Nvidia Continue the RT Push

image_3323_8716

Seems like Nvidia?s stance on Windows RT hasn?t changed a lot in the past three months, despite the bad news coming from Redmond and many other manufacturers. You might already know this, but it is worth reading it once again ? Microsoft practically lost almost one billion USD due to the Surface RT ?inventory adjustments?. In other and very simple words, the company overproduced a tablet that underperformed on the market. Without going into particular reasoning behind how that happened, apparently both companies are still working together to push out a new Surface RT-based device(s) soon. Even amidst all of the news that Windows RT

Android Unchained ? Google?s Platform Reaches 80% of Smartphone Market

image_3321_8714

For some time now, Apple?s platform has been having difficulties, as analysts recorded a drop in market share with each passing quarter. While some do believe that this is mostly due to the expectation of a new model at some point this year, Apple will surely have an uphill battle from this point on. IDC?s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker was usually on spot when it comes to sheer numbers, and according to their report, vendors shipped a total of 236.4 million smartphones, more than a 50% rise year-over-year. One thing is clear – Android is virtually unstoppable, as platform reached 79.3% market share in

LG, Lenovo and ZTE Rise Against Apple and Samsung

image_3290_8683

After a long time, vendors other than Samsung and Apple managed to score positive results in the mobile world. According to the IDC, some of the phone manufacturers recorded a triple-digit growth rate, and that’s not only for their feature phone offerings ? but Android smartphone units as well. IDC data shows that Lenovo and LG have managed to rise by 130.6% and 108.6% in smartphone unit shipments when compared year-over-year. Even though both Apple and Samsung managed to sell more smartphones, they did lose market share by a few percentage points, thanks to the fierce competition. "The smartphone market is still a rising tide

Microsoft Earns $5 Billion in 4Q13, Surface RT a Complete Failure

image_3281_8674

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) released their Q4 2013 financial results (along with full fiscal year 2014 report), and while there are no major abnormalities when it comes to revenue and net income, it is worth noting that Surface RT failure did cost the company almost a billion USD. The company announced $19.9 billion in revenue with $4.97 billion in net income. These numbers are, by themselves very good, but it is worth noting that Microsoft lost $900 million ?related to Surface RT inventory adjustments,? so results could?ve been even better (as the loss is included in the overall results) ? a fact that didn?t exactly please investors.

2Q13 for Nokia: Increased Lumia Sales, U.S. a Hard Nut to Crack

image_3280_8673

Nokia Corp. (NYSE:NOK) just published their Q2 2013 earnings, and the report holds no surprises at all. On the financial side of the story, the company reported an operating loss of around $151 million with $7.5 billion in revenue. Despite the revenue results being lower than in the same period last year, it seems that the year of the catastrophic losses seems to be far behind the company, as they continue with restructuring on a smaller scale. The company sold 7.4 million Lumia smartphones in 2Q13. To put things into perspective, in the same quarter last year, Nokia managed to sell only 4 million Windows
