Snapchat Launches AR Art Platform

Snapchat plans to launch a new art initiative aimed at using augmented reality to feature art installations around the world. A countdown clock magically appeared, and a snippet of javascript underlying the page appears to confirm that the reveal is a collaboration with renowned artist and big Snapchat fan Jeff Koons. The only piece of art on the site is a photo of Central Park in New York City with people sitting about in an open lawn. However, dogged software engineer and Twitter user Jonah Grant uncovered the secret by setting his clock ahead. According to the screenshots, Snapchat is calling on artists to submit

Kevin didn’t want to drop out of school, so he passed on the opportunity. During the college years, he got his first taste of the startup world after being chosen as one of twelve students to participate in the prestigious Mayfield Fellows Program. This year’s Oculus Connect brought us some really big news for the rising VR industry. Over two hours long keynote session with key executives from Facebook and Oculus covered everything from prices, release dates, new stuff brought into the VR, and more hardware and software news. Mark Zuckeberg started the session strongly by announcing an upcoming standalone VR headset. This 2017 mainstream Rift headset will be affordable, and something in between medium and enthusiast gear but limited Gear VR. Graphene Batteries Enable Future; Magic Leap and other AR/VR Players

Third week of July saw a major technology breakthrough that will probably affect the shape of the world we currently live in. While the previous attempts at creating a non-lithium based battery pack did not result in a major volume, the tide is turning. Turnigy Graphene brought the technology to market for DIY and enthusiast markets (battery packs for drones, model planes, RC cars etc.), and now Chinese company Dongxu Optoelectronics launched a consumer version of the graphene battery technology.  Named G-King Battery Pack, Dongxu is launching a battery pack for mobile phones and tablets promising record quick recharges. While the product has somewhat modest capacity of 4,800 mAh (Thermaltake’s

GeForce GTX 1070 and 1080 Shortage Until August?

With the conclusion of E3 2016 trade show, which took place last week in Los Angeles, California – many international guests went on for the hunt for several hot ticketed items – HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and of course, Pascal-based GeForce GTX 1070 and GTX 1080. The ‘retail’ mission was the only option after availability from online e-tailers simply did not transpire. HTC Vive is available in 3 out of five Microsoft stores we’ve checked, while Oculus Rift availability was tied to Intel’s Retail Experience. Best Buy in West Hollywood didn’t had Intel Retail Experience and there was no Rift, but the story changed in

Did Seebright Just Launch Google Cardboard for AR?

Augmented Reality, also called Mixed Reality (MR, MxR) is set to represent a very large part of our lives. Even today, if you own a car with a heads-up display (HUD), you are a user of Augmented Reality. Still, the development of AR applications is extremely difficult due to high barrier of entry. Unlike the VR, where you can purchase an Open Source VR Hacker 1.4 headset (OSVR) for just $299.99 –   AR headsets can set you back for thousands of dollars. Case in point is Microsoft’s HoloLens, where a development kit will set you back for $3000. Osterhaut Design Group sells their R-7 glasses for $2799.99. Thus,

Facebook Servers Are a Lesson in Minimalism and Efficiency

Bloomberg’s intrepid reporter and best selling book author Ashlee Vance recently launched a tech documentary called ‘Hello World’. Focusing on countries, he travels across the globe with his team and checks to see how the globalization made the world smaller and enabled innovation to come out of each corner of planet Earth. Second episode of Hello World visited Sweden, and while we do recommend you watch the whole show, we caught something very interesting: Facebook’s servers. “(Facebook Servers) are all built to be as energy and cooling efficient as possible,” said Joel Kjellgren, Site Manager, Facebook. “There are no fans at all at this one, as you can

Earth vs. Social: Facebook is the Largest Nation in the World

Facebook often claims they are the largest social network in the world. Even though there are many non-humans on the list (pets), the undeniable fact is that Facebook has more people using its services than there are people living in China. If we would extrapolate the numbers of social media users and real world countries, we would get quite an interesting list. Thus, we decided to compile data from Wikipedia, showing the list of citizens in largest countries in the world, and an August 2015 report from We Are Social, a British-based analyst firm which focuses on tracking trends in the world of social media. The results

Facebook Gives Nielsen Access to Your Private Chat Messages

Definitions of ‘Social Media’, ‘Social Network’ and ‘Private’, ‘Personal’ are increasingly becoming distant as two continents moving apart. We received news from Electronic Frontier Foundation that Facebook enabled Nielsen, a TV ratings company – to scan information from your public and private posts and messages if the filters detect you’re discussing something about television. If you posted something about a TV show or discussed it with your friends, Nielsen plans to record it and use it for their industry-standard ratings reports. The conversations will be marked separately, as ‘Social Content Ratings’. According to Facebook, the company claims they will collect information in anonymous way, only pasting and sending content

Facebook Content Police Censors Image from a German Museum

The clash of cultures is inevitable once you move beyond your own borders. A lot of American companies had issues being present in China, for example – and that lead to bans of particular companies. Watching YouTube or being on Facebook (NYSE:FB) in China is impossible without a friendly VPN/Proxy server, because those companies refused to ‘play ball’ with the Chinese authorities. And yes, all the companies which were targeted would often criticize their policy and refused to abide to censorship. Yet, every once a while, a slight ‘what the he…’ happens when the censorship scissors of Facebook’s Political Correctness Police appears. This time, a

Google is No More, Meet the Alphabet

‘Corporate restructuring’ is a term reserved typically for downsizing the company, selling or ‘spinning off’ corporate assets etc. However, when it comes to Google, something out of the blue happened – company leaders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin announced the birth of a new company, which will now own Google and all of its subsidiaries, as well as couple other companies. The duo announced the new company, called Alphabet (Alpha-bet meaning ‘the return for investor benchmark’) after the stock market closed. We suspect that the .xyz domain is going to become very popular for ‘follow the leader’ culture in Silicon Valley. As Larry wrote; “We did a lot of things that seemed crazy at

OPINION: What is the Future of Virtual Reality?

When it comes to emerging technologies, which are the ones that stand out in 2015? While there are a number to choose from, it is undoubtedly virtual reality (VR) that is capturing the imaginations of developers, brands and consumers alike. Even Mark Zuckerberg is stating that “VR is the next step for Facebook.” Not only does this have the potential to be lucrative, for example, but it can also change the lives of customers and the world around us forever. Although the technology behind VR has been in development for more than a decade and remains one of the industries worst kept secrets, during the

Facebook Bank: Introduces Micro Payments up to $10,000

If we remove the borders on this planet, the number of Facebook netizens would place it as the largest country in the world. With over 1.44 billion users, it is larger than China (1.39 billion) or India (1.25 billion). As the Facebook platform matured over time, the company added more and more features which are akin to living in a country. You have ability to communicate with your neighbors through all (digital) means – text, voice, video; attend sport events, watch movies (currently relying on link sharing) and voice out your opinions. The next step of maturing the platform was somewhat easy to predict, but hard
