Silicon Valley graphics chipmaker Nvidia, announced a new, more powerful computing platform for use in autonomous vehicles. The company claims its new system, code named Pegasus, can be used to power Level 5, fully driverless cars without steering wheels, pedals, or mirrors. Deutsche Post DHL Group, the world’s largest mail and logistics company, and ZF [ZFF.UL], a top automotive parts supplier, plan to deploy a fleet of autonomous delivery trucks based on the new chips, starting in 2019, NVIDIA said for Reuters. The third generation of NVIDIA’s Drive PX automotive line is a multi-chip platform the size of car license plates with datacenter-class processing power.
Ford has started equipping its designers with Microsoft’s HoloLens, the augmented reality technology Microsoft is rolling out for commercial and industrial applications. While the companies are purchasing $5,000 HoloLens Commercial Suite headsets, the components themselves are subject to change for specific customers. We’ve heard stories of customers that bought HoloLens Commercial Suite and received (now cancelled) 2nd generation. Then again, all of this is a warm-up for the 3rd generation HoloLens, planned for a commercial market launch as early as next year. This is not new in the world of car industry since HoloLens headset has been slowly pivoting towards commercial markets over the past year. NASA, Volvo, Lowe’s, Audi, and
It is one thing to watch Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton take on the famous Grand Hotel Hairpin bend by Fairmont Hotel in Monte Carlo’s Formula 1 track while sipping on lemonade and sitting comfortably on your couch. It is another to be sitting in the car itself, calculating every inch of that upcoming u-shaped curve, braking and accelerating at the most precise of times. Ever wonder what that’s like? Well, put your lemonade down and get your VR headset on, because one San Francisco-based company is doing just that – placing you directly in the driver’s seat. It is just the Formula E circuit
Tesla CEO Elon Musk was on display past weekend handing over the car keys to company’s long-awaited Model 3. At minimum, you will see 30 mid-priced electrical sedans on the roads in North America. With over 500,000 pre-orders, Tesla Model 3 is one of the most anticipated vehicles the auto industry have seen to date. Priced at $35,000-55,000, this is a drastic reduction compared to Musk’s Model S and X, which are often more than double the cost. “We finally have a great, affordable, electric car – that’s what this day means,” Musk said. “I’m really confident this will be the best car in this
“I think there are lot of things that can be done around gaming, VR [Virtual Reality] and AR [Augmented Reality].” said Greg Maffei, CEO of Liberty Media. “There’s an enormous amount of video feed and data that we have about the races that we are already capturing that we are not in any way processing incrementally for the dedicated fan, or opportunities around things like gambling.” When such words come from the co-owner of FIA Formula E Championship, and the new owner of Formula One World Championship i.e. F1 it is clear that the way how we consume sports is going to change in the future
In the late afternoon California time, or early morning Singapore time, Elon Musk, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Tesla Motors, Inc. posted what is his second Master Plan for Tesla. On August 2nd, 2006 Elon posted the first Tesla Master Plan, one we can say the company pretty much checked all the marks. Just a few days before the 10 anniversary, we’re treated to another plan. In this article, we’ll bring you the most interesting bits: Tesla is Becoming an Utility Company “Create a smoothly integrated and beautiful solar-roof-with-battery product that just works, empowering the individual as their own utility, and then scale that throughout the world.
Personalized buying experience is something every brand wants to offer to its customers. For example, Italian hypercar manufacturer Pagani Automobili S.p.A. produces approximately 40-50 cars a year, and the manufacturer has about 20 showrooms around the globe with further plans of expansion. Given the manufacturing volume, not all stores can have a car all the time. Procedure of buying a Pagani is something special, an in-depth experience that takes several stages – first, a customer will configure the car using an online configurator, then visit a store and get the feel for marvelous materials used and see the car in 4K resolution, pay a deposit and receive the line number. Once the
Lexus announced that the company sold over 1 million hybrid vehicles since the world’s first luxury hybrid vehicle, the RX 400h, went on sale in April 2005. It’s quite a welcome piece of news in today’s world of eco-friendly oriented living, giving the human civilization more things to rejoice about as well. It also marks a sign of coming times. The sales of hybrids and electricity powered vehicles is steadily in a growth cycle lately. As of the end of March, Lexus has sold approximately 1,000,600 hybrid vehicles in 11 years. To commemorate this milestone, a new NX 300h was delivered to a Lexus customer
Back on CES 2016, Jen-Hsun Huang unveiled the Nvidia DRIVE PX 2, a mobile supercomputer which now serves as a base for development of self-driving vehicles from the likes of Volvo, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors and many others. DRIVE PX 2 comes with an impressive set of specifications, which are delivering no less than 24 TOPS and 8 TFLOPS SP performance. The first DRIVE PX 2 system delivered to the customers actually used Maxwell-based MXM modules, i.e. it used a combination of first generation Pascal-based Tegra silicon with a known value, the GM206 graphics processor. Fast forward to three months later, Jen-Hsun was back on the stage
As a category of motorsport, an all-electric FIA Formula E championship is gaining in popularity. Even though it is only in its second year, the sport made a lot of progress by interacting with the fans and the media in a more open way than any other branch of motorsport. The Formula E organization is taking a full advantage of its collaboration with its technical partners. From offering the races live on YouTube throughout the race day (most of them last for 9hrs+) to replays and highlights shot with HD and 360 ‘virtual reality’ videos, the championship is more attractive than ever. If you want to follow

At the 2016 GPU Technology Conference, Nvidia hosted a packed session with at least 1,000 people in attendance. The topic was a deep dive into the DRIVE PX2, autonomous drive development kit which will start shipping later this year in its full performance capability – as the current units are only being shipped with Maxwell-class GPUs to Tier 1 customers. Hosted by Shri Sundaram, the session actually gave a very good insight not just into how DRIVE PX 2 works, but also what is Nvidia bringing to the market in the second half of the year, in the form of two new 16nm FinFET processors, Pascal-based Tegra and
The ‘great wait’ is over, as Tesla completed its strategy set all the way at the time when the ‘Tesla Motors’ was a small tent inside the SpaceX factory in Hawthorne, CA. The plan was always the same: S-E-X-Y. It all started with building a sports car (Roadster) that will pay for the development of a limo, build a limo (Model S) that will pay for the development of SUV (Model X) and a mainstream car, and build a mainstream car (Model E 3) that will bring e-mobility for masses. As we all know now, Model X was not a part of Tesla’s initial plans (that was the
The NVIDIA PX autonomous car development platform recently received the Award of Excellence in the Autonomous Driving/AI division. The accolades were handed earlier this week at the 7th Automotive Telecommunication Technology Tokyo exhibition, marking another achievement. It is estimated that in 2015 over 88 million new cars were bought. Almost 53 million came out of just six manufacturers: Toyota, Volkswagen Group, General Motors, Renault-Nissan, Hyundai and Ford. If you add five million from FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), that’s almost 60 million vehicles. It is of no surprise that traditional PC and mobile names such as NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Intel all see the automotive industry as a key battlefield. Tens of millions of processors promise advanced telemetry, self-driving or automated driving capabilities, new level of infotainment, and ‘always online’ vehicles. In a research document called Automotive Safety and Autonomous Driving Service, ABI Research put out a
Rimac Automobili d.o.o. (Ltd.) is launching a production version of its Concept_One, an electric hypercar developed in Croatia, Europe. What makes Concep_One special is that it served as a technology demonstrator which was so impressive, several car manufacturers contracted Rimac to build them a bespoke version of their own vehicles. At the same time, Christian von Koenigsegg was so impressed with the in-house technology that his Regera is powered by a Koenigsegg-Rimac drivetrain, without a gearbox. Concept_One is a different beast altogether. 1088 hp, and 1600 Nm / 1180 pound ft. (electronically limited) take the vehicle to 300 kph / 186 mph in just a bit over 14
Elon Musk recently posted on Twitter that the reservations for Model 3 will take place starting on March 31 in Tesla stores, and April 1 for online customers. Unlike all of its the previous models – Roadster, Model S, Model X – Model 3 will be launched on a global scale, with every market covered. If you are interested, you will need to put $1,000 down, and bear in mind that the delivery priority as always – will go to the customers who will order higher trim / spec car, as the sales develop. Perhaps the key part of Model 3 selling strategy is how Tesla Motors, Inc.
Over the past couple of months, we’re seeing a lot of corporate movements inside Samsung Group. First, Samsung Display announced it plans to completely offload its LCD manufacturing business, starting with a sale of L.5 factory to China’s Truly. Second, Samsung SDI decided to sell its whole chemical business sector and focus solely on improving the chemistry for its car battery business. The size of investment is nothing to be sneezed at. Over the next three years, newly established ‘Samsung SDI Chemical’ will be sold off, while Samsung’s SDI will invest at least $2.51 billion into development of car batteries. This is not all, as all
