Zotac to Launch a VR Mini PC Powerhouse

Computex Taipei is upon us. Starting on Monday, over 150,000 people will descent onto the capital of Taiwan, a small independent country which is the home to manufactures of our digital life.  One vendor not coming out of Taiwan is ZOTAC International, a company operating out of Macau. This brother of Sapphire mostly manufacturers NVIDIA and Intel devices, while Sapphire Technologies is in charge of manufacturing AMD-powered components and devices. “This Computex comes at the right time for us to showcase our technical capabilities with award winning designs,” states Tony Wong, CEO, ZOTAC International. “We are extremely thrilled to introduce our lineup of solutions that exhibits our innovation and adventurous

TSMC Tapes out 10nm A11 Processors for Apple

Ten years, even five years ago Intel was the undisputed process leader, and if you wanted to see how the new process node would look like, you would wait to see a new processor coming from Intel architecture. That was the unwritten law of the semiconductor industry, with an occasional blimp when TSMC would introduce a half-node step, beating Intel’s 90/65/45/32nm with 80nm, 55nm, 40nm and 28nm GPUs for ATI and Nvidia. Today, Intel’s missed approach to mobile resulted in company loosing the process node advantage, and ultimately being forced to cancel the most of Atom product family. And now, to add insult to injury, DigiTimes (also known

Future 2016 and 2017 Intel Processors Benchmarks Leaked

Over the course of 2016 and 2017, Intel will introduce two new architectures for the desktop platform – Broadwell-E and Kaby Lake. Broadwell-E will succeed the venerable Haswell-E as a drop-in replacement for the X99 platform. On the other side, Kaby Lake is Intel’s third (and last?) processor architecture that uses 14nm FinFET process. First to launch will be Broadwell-E processors in six-, eight- and ten-core versions (sexa-, octa-, deca-core). Branded as Core i7-6800 and i7-6900 Extreme Edition series, these processors represent the best Intel can offer to the market. The company adopted a two-fold approach; i7-6850K, a six-core processor for ultimate overclockers clocked at

SPEC Benchmark Puts Cloud Computing to a Test

Many Cloud providers claim their service is the best for your cloud computing needs. IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) is a hotbed of computing for the better part of last decade, and we’re seeing the revenue and profit numbers delivered by Amazon, Google, Microsoft and others. The rise of IaaS is also one of key reasons why Dell went on a bend in order to acquire EMC, and many others. Measuring the performance of infrastructure is a critical task, and this is where SPEC, an industry consortium comes along. Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation i.e. SPEC creates benchmarks based on real-world workloads, from professional / commercial graphics in

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich Publishes New Corporate Strategy

Intel is undergoing a transformation. The company, which at the point ballooned to over 140,000 employees is shedding 11% of its workforce and realigning itself into a new technology / product driven company which will not fight for the market by loosing billions of dollars (look at the ill-fated attempt to buy market share in mobile). Intel will push the ‘logic to memory’. The logic is now being focused around x86 and FPGAs, while the memory will evolve from SRAM / DRAM / NAND to new memory types such as 3D X-Point. In order to drive the (new) message home, Brian published another letter to its employees.

100 PFLOPS: China’s Supercomputer Circumvents U.S. Sales Ban

A year ago, we revealed that the U.S. State Department blocked the further sales of Intel Xeon and Xeon Phi processors to Chinese institutions, most notably the Tianhe-2 supercomputer. The U.S. Administration also blocked the move in which a China-based investment fund would invest in AMD i.e. one of original reasons for Radeon Technologies Group – which is even without the said investment, performing above and beyond its financial capabilities. The reason to move against Tianhe-2 is complicated yet simple – ever since its debut in June 2013, the Tianhe-2 supercomputer from NUDT (National University for Defense Technologies) sits on top of the World’s 500 fastest computers list. From the looks of

Tick-Tock is Dead: Intel Confirms New Processor Cadence

Several months ago, we exclusively disclosed the new architectural cadence for Intel processors. After a decade of manufacturing processors in an bi-annual cycle (Tick – new architecture, old process; Tock – new process and ‘old’ architecture), Intel’s SEC 10-K filing (PDF download) officially killed the Tick-Tock cadence, moving to a three-fold product line-up for a single manufacturing process. Approximately four years ago, Tick-Tock encountered a first significant hiccup with Ivy Bridge being a 22nm version of Sandy Bridge. Ivy Bridge was the first processor from Intel that we could call APU, instead of a CPU – as 40% of the die was allocated for new graphics architecture. The

Andy Grove, Silicon Valley Pioneer Dies

We received news that Andrew Steven ‘Andy’ Grove, (born András István Gróf), co-founder, CEO and Chairman of Intel passed away at the age of 79. Alongside Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, he was the foundation of Intel Corporation in 1968. Grove survived World War II under a false name in order to escape Nazi prosecution. A holocaust survivor, ‘Andris’ didn’t fit in pressing communist regime that encapsulated Hungary into the East Block. During the bloody Hungarian revolution in 1956, Andris managed to cross the Austrian border, reaching the United States in 1957. On the first day of operations for NM Electronics, Inc., Andy joined Robert Noyce and Gordon

Intel’s Skull Canyon Micro Gaming PC Supports AMD XConnect

Intel hosted its GDC media conference at The Box meeting venue in San Francisco, and the company demonstrated its commitment to the gaming community. Intel sees gaming market as a leading entertainment revenue driver by 2019-2021 (in alignment with predictions by Jon Peddie Research, Gartner, Gaming Business Review, DBI Intelligence etc.), and is making steps to make gaming pervasive entertainment experience. The company reorganized its desktop division last year and instituted new executive team that focuses on improving the gaming experience. One of results of those moves were focusing on human resources and bringing talented engineers back from mobile and other business divisions. We discussed this newly found focus with key

HBM2 Will Revolutionize Your Computer

Even though HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) standard only launched last June in the form of AMD’s Fiji GPU, that memory was considered a ‘trial run’ for HBM2 – a memory standard which is here to stay. Launching in mid-2016 with AMD Polaris and NVIDIA Pascal, HBM2 memory standard will redefine computing as we know it. There are several memory standards which want to replace DDR and GDDR memory standards, including Intel-Micron 3D XPoint (pronounced: Cross Point) Optane memory – but HBM looks to have the widest support. If we compare this to HBM2, it had 1GB capacity and offered 0.5 Gbps bandwidth in 4-Cube configuration for a

iStaging: Is this Taiwan’s Second Act?

If you live in Taiwan or in APAC area of the world, there’s a lot of conversations saying that Asian (manufacturing) Tigers such as Taiwan ‘missed the boat’ when it comes to shared economy and application economy. While it is true that Taiwanese are quite conservative and cost-driven (which is a shame), the whole island has a specific positive vibe. Luckily, the future does not rest on old-school management which is still baffled why they cannot win contracts which are service-intensive, there is a new generation of Taiwanese which are connected in more ways that one. In fact, I would dare to publicly state that Taiwanese are one of most

VRC: Introducing VR World’s PC for VR

The wait is almost over. After numerous announcements and stories, March and April brings us the launch of high-quality Virtual Reality hardware and VR-optimized AAA games and other applications. VR equipment manufacturers are going as far not just to recommend, but also to sell a recommended configuration on their website. Oculus recently launched their “Oculus Ready PC” specification, and selected vendors (ASUS, Alienware and Dell) sell you their PCs ‘with purchase of Rift’. However, the components in question may not bring the results in the long run, and there is a geolocation limitation on the systems Oculus recommends to its customers. Here at VR World, we look at things differently.

Intel Invests in Adesto Technologies

Intel recently submitted an SEC SC-13G ‘Statement of Beneficial Ownership’ in Adesto Technologies Corporation, making their 5.1% investment in Adesto public. As Intel focuses the investment and product portfolio on Internet of Things (IoT), the company is actively teaming up and investing in companies which hold significant stake in desired markets. Adesto endured a troubled IPO, first by being forced to reduce the valuation of the company, and then shares sunk by 25%, reducing the market cap to $86.08 million. The IPO issues do not exclusively stem from the company, as Adesto faced a rough ride on the markets – which affected everybody, from companies like LinkedIn

Intel Kills Overclocking on Non-K Skylake Processors

For the last couple of months, enthusiasts ‘on a budget’ were buying Intel processors based on latest ‘Skylake’ architecture and overclocked them to obtain extra performance. What made overclocking especially attractive was the possibility to overclock cheaper, ‘non-K’ processors using the old method of raising the base-clock (BCLK). Given that the company faced ‘Skylake crashes in Prime95’ affair, Intel decided to push microcode updates which would not just prevent Skylake-based CPUs from crashing but to prevent all non-K CPUs from overclocking as well. This update should not surprise anyone, as lack of any meaningful competition in the performance space meant the company was free to limit the overclocking capabilities. In order to overclock an Intel processor, you

BOXX Launches the Most Advanced PC in the World?

Buying a compute device – be that a personal computer, workstation or a server, typically comes with a certain set of features which does not change. All workstation vendors for example, offer 1-4 expansion cards, typically a GPU and computational or storage cards. Those features are limited by what motherboard vendors can offer, and ATX/eATX/SSI standards can offer up to X amount of cards. BOXX Technologies decided to challenge that by launching APEXX 5, a custom designed system which can host up to seven expansion cards. For example, a Quadro GPU for sync/display output and five Tesla boards for compute. If you go with Dual-GPU boards, such as Tesla
