This week with Stories You Might’ve Missed, we’ll be covering the announcement of the Snapdragon XR1, as well as Google and LG’s new VR display technology. If you haven’t seen these segments before, Stories You Might’ve Missed is our dedicated segment for relevant stories that we didn’t cover this past week. Below are the stories themselves, as well as links to sources so you can read more if they caught your interest. Qualcomm introduces Snapdragon XR1, their first VR/AR-centric chipset Qualcomm’s interest in XR (Xtended Reality- blanket term for AR, VR, etc) is no secret. We’ve spoken to them directly about it before. At the
Promising display technique may help avoid VR sickness
European researchers today announced a display technique that may help many virtual reality users avoid nausea, one of the most common symptoms of “virtual reality sickness.” Virtual reality sickness, which often causes symptoms similar to motion sickness, can result from latency between eye movement and displayed changes in the VR environment. Often, there is a trade-off when using higher resolution images in VR: although they improve realism, they also increase computational processing demands, which can increase nausea-inducing latency. These latest findings by researchers at Brunel University London, and the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences and Saarland University in Germany, builds upon a technique called “foveated
GoPro starting with its 360-Degree Camera
Action camera specialist GoPro has announced its first model to take 360-degree videos and photos. After several years in development, and a series of delays, Fusion is finally coming to market. Fusion features a built-in image stabilization, spatial audio capture and can be used underwater. GoPro has been talking about since CES 2016 and now it is finally coming to market. It will ship in November, and the price is $699. As CEO Nick Woodman teased onstage at the company’s event in San Francisco, there’s potentially much more than meets the eye to Fusion. GoPro says the Fusion “marks the beginning of a new creative, and
Microsoft Prepares VR Partnerships for Windows 10 Holographic Edition
Last winter Microsoft announced that the company started working together with its PC hardware partners to develop headsets that support a mixed mode, between virtual and augmented reality. These headsets run a new version of Microsoft’s software called Windows Mixed Reality, a version of Windows that natively supports both augmented (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences. At the Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin, or IFA, the biggest annual consumer electronics trade fair in Europe which started last week, this software giant took the center stage. They said that they will include their “Windows Mixed Reality” in the upcoming Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (available from Oct 17).
SLIVER.TV Raises $9.8 Million to Transport eSports into VR
There’s no shortage of funding for new and exciting companies which are focusing on providing a new experience for the consumers. One such examples is the “mainstreamization” of eSports, with tournaments receiving as much visitors as many mainstream sport events. That’s not all, as eSport streamers drove YouTube and Twitch to new heights in terms of videos being generated and followed. Building on its launch in 2016, SLIVER.tv signed numerous partnerships to bring their technology into eSports. The company signed agreements and started streaming numerous events, bringing brands such as DreamHack, ESL One and Intel Extreme Masters. Their focus on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) and
Qualcomm Unveils Depth Sensing Spectra Module Camera
Qualcomm’s AR/VR efforts are accelerating. Following the launch of stand-alone Vive with Snapdragon VR 835 platform, the company launched Spectra ISP camera module for smartphone and headset manufacturers. Goal is to enable several new features which may be the key to simplification of how users around the world use their smartphones and headsets. While we mostly know Qualcomm as the manufacturer of Snapdragon processors, the company is also leading manufacturer of image processing systems, i.e. cameras. Second generation Spectra ISP proves that leadership with innovations such as active or passive depth sensing and biometric recognition (iris scan, facial features) – enabling future smart devices to
Xiaomi Mijia MI SPHERE 360 Camera Review
Xiaomi is slowly opening itself and their products to the west. The Chinese smartphone giant is expanding its availability on global markets thanks to its e-tailers. One of their leading partners is turning out to be GearBest, who recently sent us the Xiaomi Mijia MI SPHERE 360 Camera. I took the camera to the city of Varazdin in Croatia and checked the real world performance. Given the price of mere $255, can Xiaomi’s 360 degree camera offer the ultimate price / performance ratio? First off, I have to admit that setting the camera was a real pain in the behind, trying to figure out how to install phone
NVIDIA Announces Bigger, Better Toolkit for VR Developers
GPU Technology Conference 2017 is premier, NVIDIA just announced first set of VR news coming from the conference. Maybe the highlight of today is that the company is releasing VRWorks Audio and 360 Video software development kits. With this move NVIDIA is making VR more immersive, and VR development easier. So lets recap all that came to our knowledge today: VRWorks is a comprehensive suite of APIs, libraries, and engines that enable application and headset developers to create amazing virtual reality experiences. It enables a new level of presence by bringing physically realistic visuals, sound, touch interactions, and simulated environments to virtual reality. Key components of VRWorks are being
GoPro’s 360-Degree Camera Will Be Released By The End Of 2017
Over a year ago, at CES 2016 GoPro teased the world with the new consumer 360-degree camera called Fusion. We have not heard much about it since then… until today. After another dozen or so months in development, the company finally announced the GoPro Fusion, the latest member of GoPro’s lineup for “fully immersive virtual reality content, non-VR video, and photos”. The camera is now expected to hit the shelves by the end of 2017 (read; more months of development ahead) and allows users to capture stunning 5.2K video at 30 frames per second and breathtaking photos in full spherical mode. Details on pricing and other
CyberLink Enters VR with the New PowerDVD 17
CyberLink is one of first software companies coming out of Taiwan that succeeded in becoming a major international player. From the dawn of multi-media and first DVD-ROM drives, PowerDVD software was there to play the content (and yes, we’ll never forget the ability to change the regional lock through software). Just like everything changes with time, PowerDVD gained tens of millions of users. With PowerDVD 17, their flagship movie and media player is bringing native support for 360 and 3D-360 video for VR headsets, Ultra HD Blu-ray video, as well as HDR10 format support. PowerDVD 17 adds support for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive VR headsets to bring
New NVIDIA Quadro Family Plans to Heavily Monetize Pascal GPUs
NVIDIA’s scenario about the GeForce / Quadro / Tesla line-up experienced a lot of turnover over the past couple of years. The sequence of “launch as GeForce, downclock as Tesla, optimize and launch as Quadro,” changed into “launch as Tesla, optimize as GeForce and be reliable as Quadro”. With Pascal, story turned to be almost the same. NVIDIA introduced GP100 as Tesla in April 2016, followed with GP102 chip as Titan X (no longer branded as GeForce), Quadro P6000 and Tesla P40. At the same time, the GP104/106/107 did not experience the same sequence, with only GP104 debuting as Quadro P5000 and Tesla P40. Second day of
Razer Acquires THX
“The Force is with you, young Skywalker, but… you are not a Jedi yet!” said Darth Vader in “Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi,” known as the third and final installment in the original Star Wars trilogy. This was the first film where sound was mastered using the newly-established THX standards. This movie brought new levels of sound and accented the story, a brainchild of producer George Lucas and a gifted audio engineer and film theorist, Tomlinson M. Holman. The duo founded and developed a new sound quality assurance system which shared the name and was officially presented with the brand THX. THX stands
360fly and RaceRender Linkup Brings Immersive Racing Videos
“I think there are lot of things that can be done around gaming, VR [Virtual Reality] and AR [Augmented Reality].” said Greg Maffei, CEO of Liberty Media. “There’s an enormous amount of video feed and data that we have about the races that we are already capturing that we are not in any way processing incrementally for the dedicated fan, or opportunities around things like gambling.” When such words come from the co-owner of FIA Formula E Championship, and the new owner of Formula One World Championship i.e. F1 it is clear that the way how we consume sports is going to change in the future
Can Vuze Become the Next GoPro?
Just two years ago, betting on VR / AR was considered visionary, with scattered remnants of an ill-fated attempt to immerse us in a three dimensional world with quite frankly, a sub-par experience. 3D glasses would work if every household bought a 70-85″ TV, but the reality saw 32″ TVs being sold with 3D glasses. Virtual Reality transplants you from one world to another and the real money lies in finding the next YouTube, a website that redefined Internet as we know today. Numerous companies rode the coattails of small Silicon Valley startup that got swallowed up by Google. Red Bull and GoPro both based their marketing / business model around video content on YouTube,
Report: Amazon To Ban Sales Of Apple TV And Google Chromecast
In a true “gloves off” scenario, Amazon will ban the sales of Apple TV and Google Chromecast devices in their shop, starting October 29th. This marks another chapter in the ever going battle of streaming services and providers. It seems that the online store giant is taking none of it from Google and Apple as it won’t allow Prime Video on neither the Apple TV and Chromecast devices. Likewise, the app is also not available for the Chromecast. The current generation of Apple TV (not the newly released one) is the 14th best selling device in the entire electronics section of Amazon. Currently is ranks 4th place
Nokia Launches a Surprising VR Device: Professional Camera
Without any doubt, Nokia is one of most versatile companies in the world. This company was founded in 1865, and the products the company made since its inception till today is almost deserves to name the company chameleon, not Nokia. After a lot of changes, the company is now consisted out of three business units (Nokia Networks, Nokia Here and Nokia Technologies), one of which is currently in the process of sale, probably to a joint German automotive maker effort (VAG AG represented by Audi, Daimler AG represented by Mercedes-Benz and BMW). Given that Nokia Technologies is tasked with the return to mobile space, we were caught off-guard
Watch Impressive F1 2015 Teaser and Gameplay Videos
The current state of affairs in Formula 1 is something that kept me away from the sport. The level of predictability simply got to my nerves and the overall appeal was lost along the way. On the other hand, my particular motorsport gaming attraction is growing stronger. One of the upcoming releases from Codemasters, dubbed F1 2015 , is a simulation game revolving around the most famous racing sport out there. But, will it make me (and everybody else) love Formula 1 once again? The teaser below is impressive to say the least. The last Formula 1 game I have played was back when I was in high school, and was one of
AMD Next-Gen Cards Pictured: Meet Radeon R9 390, Fury X
As the official unveil is being prepared for June 16 at 9AM Pacific time, we are seeing more and more leaks of the next-gen parts. It is now obvious that the Radeon 300 series will be nothing more but an enhanced, ‘refreshed’ version of Radeon R9 200 series, while Radeon Fury and Fury X will make for completely new parts, heavily optimized for AR/VR world – and incredible performance in almost all applications. According to several forums and websites, this is what AMD will unveil in a day or so – still, take this with a grain of salt. AMD Radeon R9 390 Series: Can
