CES: Rokid unveils AR glasses prototype

AI and robotics firm Rokid has unveiled a prototype of its planned augmented reality product, Rokid Glass, this week at CES. The company, better known for its home assistant products (that bear similarities in looks and functionality to Amazon’s Alexa Dot and Google’s Home Mini), appears to be making its first foray into the augmented reality space. Reportedly, the glasses will operate as a standalone headset, but also provide functionality to connect to smartphones or other devices via Bluetooth or WiFi to bolster processing power and network range. The glasses run a variant of Android 6.0 — suggesting it may eventually leverage Google’s ARCore to

Smartphones gain PC-strength VR capabilities via new codec

NGCodec, a company that specializes in developing algorithms, silicon logic and FPGA implementations for cloud video processing, this week announced the availability of their potentially transformative cloud-based encoding technologies via the Amazon AWS Marketplace. The company’s RealityCodec acts as a low-delay H.265/HEVC encoder, which allows much of the processing load of VR video streams to be shifted into the cloud. The codec also boasts sufficiently low latency that it can reliably deliver VR streams to untethered, mobile, VR head-mounted displays. “We have worked diligently to bring our advanced video codecs to the Amazon Cloud and to demonstrate the potential for cloud media and virtual reality,”

Intel Dismisses IoT for Augmented and Virtual Reality

The IoT community recently looked in disbelief as Intel started to dismantle its IoT efforts – the amount of emails we received is quite surprising, as we’re not exactly a logical place to go for IoT information. However, Intel terminated the business division that was developing wearable devices such as fitness trackers, digital clothing, baby monitors, etc. It also EOL-ed (End-of-Life) numerous IoT products with the notable exception of Curie, which is quite popular. There’s a clear reason why, and it can be found in recent ‘resurrection’ of Google Glass in ‘Enterprise Edition’, as well as wanting to react to popular products from Vuzix and ODG (Osterhaut

Samsung Disables Google Daydream VR on Galaxy Phones

While Samsung always had a clear plan that Google and its Android are just some of operating systems the company ships their products with, the company never disabled features that come with Android… until now. When Samsung Galaxy S8 arrives on the market on April 21st, it will probably take the crown of the world’s most powerful Android smartphone on the market… facing a different situation. At the moment, compared to Google’s Daydream, Samsung’s Gear VR is more rounded and polished. However, users that opt for Oculus’s mobile i.e. GearVR platform won’t be able to use Google’s own VR platform, known as Daydream. Just like YouTube platform

Hands On: Xiaomi Mi MIX White Version

Over the past couple of years we haven’t seen any noticeable change in smartphone designs – candy bar form and some minor changes. The last big thing was edge screen we saw on Samsung Galaxy “Edge” family. Not so long ago Xiaomi decided to change that with what I call, the “XPS of Smartphones” (yes, we’re referring to Dell’s Apple-killer design notebooks). Mi Mix is smartphone with no bezels, and in that way is one of the first smartphones to bring this design to life. But let’s get it clear, this phone looks like one of those leaked fake designs of future Apple or Samsung

OnePlus Discontinues 3 Phone, Replaces it with 3T

Shortly after the announcement of OnePlus 3T phone, OnePlus has confirmed that it will no longer be selling the smartphone in US and Europe. With this move OnePlus is pushing their customers to buy the newly announced OnePlus 3T. Sadly for the manufacturer, the long lead times for both the US and Europe means they could miss out on the Holiday Season 2016 sales. The OnePlus 3T comes with a somewhat larger battery (3,400mAh), extra storage option (128GB), an updated CPU (Qualcomm Snapdragon 821), and higher-resolution (16 MP) selfie-camera. The 64GB storage variant of the device costs $439, while the 128GB one carries a $479

Intel Drones Fly Around the Campfire

There is dark and there is light. Fire. How long is it in human hands? Out there, at night, by the campfire. Magic of this entire, beautiful and sometimes dreadful world around us. Fire can put us in a bubble. Glittering stories that seem like they starting right there behind us, when we step into the darkness. Or perhaps silence by the campfire. Warmth and we with ourselves. How much today we have improved as people, become more noble than, lets say, Chinese people from the 12th century when they invented fireworks? Talk about the fire on the website dealing with the last cries of

Cube i7 Book 2 Intel Tablet with Windows 10

After a recent review of Onda OBook 20, we were wondering what are further developments in the world of affordable tablets and convertibles. Onda’s dual boot feature was quite intriguing, but being based on Cherry Trail meant the performance was somewhat lagging even behind the Qualcomm Snapdragon processors (in case of Android OS). After some digging, we discovered the Cube i7 Book 2 tablet/laptop. Amazingly, it isn’t all that more expensive than the Cherry Trail-based Obook. Decision to name the product “I7” in order to bring attention to the processing side would pay dividends if the Cube I7 actually featured Intel’s Core i7 processor. Instead, this

Review: Onda OBook 20 Plus Dual OS Tablet

There are many Windows 10 tablets on the market. Labeled as “transformers”, “2-in-1s” or “convertibles” – they mostly pack a decent specs list. The same can be said for Android tablets. However, it seems the two operating systems mentioned do not satisfy their customers and it isn’t surprising to see dual boot tablets coming out of Far East. Of course, there are some technical issues related to the compatibility, but devices such as Onda OBook 20 seem to solve such problems. The design of the device is slick and thin. Back of the OBook 20 features a clean plastic back-plate in an champagne color. Front

Google Acquires Eyefluence Weeks before the Daydream Launch

Eyefluence is company founded by William Torch and Jim Maggraff, with the goals to create eye tracking system that measures the intent of your mind, not just the motions of your eyes in order to control technology. This new system would allow a user to control device through movements of users eyes. This kind of tech may seem unnecessary for present day smartphones and PC-s, but as the world of immersive computing continues to barrel towards us it will become infinitely more relevant. Google certainly thinks so as it has just acquired Eyefluence for itself. According to an official statement on the Eyefluence blog: “Today, we are excited to announce that

Can Vuze Become the Next GoPro?

Just two years ago, betting on VR / AR was considered visionary, with scattered remnants of an ill-fated attempt to immerse us in a three dimensional world with quite frankly, a sub-par experience. 3D glasses would work if every household bought a 70-85″ TV, but the reality saw 32″ TVs being sold with 3D glasses. Virtual Reality transplants you from one world to another and the real money lies in finding the next YouTube, a website that redefined Internet as we know today. Numerous companies rode the coattails of small Silicon Valley startup that got swallowed up by Google. Red Bull and GoPro both based their marketing / business model around video content on YouTube,
