Google Announced WorldSense, Stand Alone VR Headset

At its annual developer conference called I/O, Google announced standalone VR headsets for the Daydream VR platform, the first of which will be made by HTC and Lenovo. Supporting these new devices is WorldSense, an inside out positional tracking system which supposedly “dramatically improves tracking” when compared to previous Daydream devices. WorldSense is a product name for a positional tracking system that operates on an ‘inside-out’ principle; it doesn’t need any external sensors or beacons to track the movement of your head through 3D space. The new fully self-contained ‘standalone’ Daydream VR headsets will use the new tech to allow for positional tracking which Google

Samsung Disables Google Daydream VR on Galaxy Phones

While Samsung always had a clear plan that Google and its Android are just some of operating systems the company ships their products with, the company never disabled features that come with Android… until now. When Samsung Galaxy S8 arrives on the market on April 21st, it will probably take the crown of the world’s most powerful Android smartphone on the market… facing a different situation. At the moment, compared to Google’s Daydream, Samsung’s Gear VR is more rounded and polished. However, users that opt for Oculus’s mobile i.e. GearVR platform won’t be able to use Google’s own VR platform, known as Daydream. Just like YouTube platform

Does MSI Hold a Trump Card in Wireless VR Race?

Several weeks ago, MSI announced the MSI VR One backpack at the Tokyo Game Show. Unlike the competition, MSI also made an announcement about the future sales as well, launching into production during October. Originally intended for launch on October 30th, it took until middle of November to bring the availability of VR One into both North America and Europe. Truth to be told, the concept of a portable VR backpack is getting challenged by innovations such as the HTC/TPCast Wireless Gig (60GHz) concept product. The extent and efficiency of wireless data transfer between headset and PC’s has not yet been confirmed in practice. Nor how it

Google Acquires Eyefluence Weeks before the Daydream Launch

Eyefluence is company founded by William Torch and Jim Maggraff, with the goals to create eye tracking system that measures the intent of your mind, not just the motions of your eyes in order to control technology. This new system would allow a user to control device through movements of users eyes. This kind of tech may seem unnecessary for present day smartphones and PC-s, but as the world of immersive computing continues to barrel towards us it will become infinitely more relevant. Google certainly thinks so as it has just acquired Eyefluence for itself. According to an official statement on the Eyefluence blog: “Today, we are excited to announce that

360fly and RaceRender Linkup Brings Immersive Racing Videos

“I think there are lot of things that can be done around gaming, VR [Virtual Reality] and AR [Augmented Reality].” said Greg Maffei, CEO of Liberty Media. “There’s an enormous amount of video feed and data that we have about the races that we are already capturing that we are not in any way processing incrementally for the dedicated fan, or opportunities around things like gambling.” When such words come from the co-owner of FIA Formula E Championship, and the new owner of Formula One World Championship i.e. F1 it is clear that the way how we consume sports is going to change in the future

MSI Backpack Brings Freedom into VR

One of key detractors for a complete immersion into virtual reality experience is the presence of cables which hinder your digital movement. Hence, the question for the VR industry is… what is freedom and how one becomes free? If you ask that question to someone from MSI, he or she would just smile and gave you something… backpack alike. You would than realize that suddenly it’s possible to have your cake and eat it too. It is possible to hunt dragons next to your sleeping girlfriend or boyfriend without waking her (or him). Actually, not just one pack but several big, ugly packs of dragons. What

Intel Doubles Down on VR and AR, Calls it Merged Reality

Slowly but certainly, Intel is unveiling its “Merged Reality” strategy. About a year and a half ago, Intel invested in Razer bringing the valuation of the said company to north of $1 billion. Exactly a year ago, that investment expanded with the launch of Open Source Virtual Reality or OSVR. Today, Razer is bringing Hacker Development Kit 2.0 to the market, and Intel announced their first lovechild codenamed Project Alloy. Project Alloy is best described as a VR Headset in the class of HTC Vive or Oculus Rift, but with the ability to “cut the VR cord”, since it features mobile processing similar to the

New Samsung GearVR 3 Arrives This Week

One of most widely used VR HMDs (Head Mounted Device) on the market is GearVR, a love child of collaboration between Facebook i.e. Oculus and Samsung. The device is growing in popularity as there are over 1.2 million active monthly users. Not to be outdone by swathes of competition – such as Chinese Baofeng Mojiong – Samsung is updating its GearVR with a third generation product. Targeting Galaxy Note 7 and Galaxy S7 / S7 Edge users, GearVR brings USB-C connector as well as improved controller. Under the majestically simple name “SM-R323”, third generation GearVR will be bundled with Galaxy Note 7 in some markets, while the most

Graphene Batteries Enable Future; Magic Leap and other AR/VR Players

Third week of July saw a major technology breakthrough that will probably affect the shape of the world we currently live in. While the previous attempts at creating a non-lithium based battery pack did not result in a major volume, the tide is turning. Turnigy Graphene brought the technology to market for DIY and enthusiast markets (battery packs for drones, model planes, RC cars etc.), and now Chinese company Dongxu Optoelectronics launched a consumer version of the graphene battery technology.  Named G-King Battery Pack, Dongxu is launching a battery pack for mobile phones and tablets promising record quick recharges. While the product has somewhat modest capacity of 4,800 mAh (Thermaltake’s

Did Seebright Just Launch Google Cardboard for AR?

Augmented Reality, also called Mixed Reality (MR, MxR) is set to represent a very large part of our lives. Even today, if you own a car with a heads-up display (HUD), you are a user of Augmented Reality. Still, the development of AR applications is extremely difficult due to high barrier of entry. Unlike the VR, where you can purchase an Open Source VR Hacker 1.4 headset (OSVR) for just $299.99 –   AR headsets can set you back for thousands of dollars. Case in point is Microsoft’s HoloLens, where a development kit will set you back for $3000. Osterhaut Design Group sells their R-7 glasses for $2799.99. Thus,

OTOY and ODG: Look Into the Future of Virtual Reality

Hot on heels of last week’s announcement that OTOY is teaming with Osterhaut Design Group to deliver a consumer version of their Augmented / Virtual Reality glasses, Jules Urbach Founder, Chairman and CEO of OTOY came on CNBC’s SquakBox. See the Microsoft Windows 10 Holographic Concept Video

Microsoft decided to take a calculated risk and leave the Virtual Reality market to Facebook (through Oculus and Samsung) and HTC with their dedicated headsets Gear VR, Rift and Vive. Their focus is on Augmented Reality, or simply put – “Mixed Reality”. The term MR is expected to replace AR quite soon, and Microsoft’s latest video demonstrates they clearly don’t want to be associated with AR as well. The video shows the vision of how can productivity be increased by introducing the collaboration/co-location effect between different users on separate locations. All future users of HoloLens should need is a collaborative suite (perhaps Microsoft’s own HoloOffice?). We certainly hope

Is ODG’s “Project Horizon” the Ultimate Mixed Reality Headset?

There’s little doubt that the most advanced augmented reality headgear currently exists solely in the realms of military use. From an eyeball projecting Heads-Up Display for the F-35 Lighting II fighter jet to high-resolution AR visor that doesn’t project blue color because well – blue is the color of the sky – these multi-thousand dollar pieces of equipment could solve the consumer conundrum for both VR and AR. Osterhout Design Group, also known as ODG is one of such military-focused company – just announced its consumer effort code named “Project Horizon”. In order to bring what might be the ultimate AR headset, ODG is teaming up
