Four years ago, Microsoft was lead by Steve Ballmer, caught in a whirlwind of the “tablet tsunami” and eroding market share. The company wanted to ditch its traditional desktop apps in favor of new touch-based apps for tablets which featured ARM processors. A half-hearted project named Windows RT was born. “Windows on ARM” project debuted on Microsoft’s first Surface RT device featuring NVIDIA Tegra processor. It was a bold and confusing attempt to force people into a new world of touch apps, but Microsoft made the fatal mistake of providing something that looked like Windows but didn’t function like Windows. Windows RT couldn’t run traditional desktop apps, but

Microsoft Skips Windows 9, Introduces Windows 10
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) appears to have decided to entirely skip the idea of Windows 9 and release their next version of Windows as Windows 10. The company’s new strategy does in fact do what the company has been aiming to do for quite some time. It helps unify the marketplaces and apps while still giving people customizeable experiences depending on the platform that they’re using. So now users can use the same app on their phone, tablet, and PC while also being able to (hopefully) share data across those devices through the cloud. They are also bringing back the start menu and getting rid of the full-page
Imagination Announces New 64-bit MIPS I6400
Imagination Technologies (LON: IMG), the company now in ownership of MIPS’ technologies, has announced a new 64-bit MIPS processor that goes by the name of the MIPS I6400. The MIPS I6400 is Imagination Technologies’ and MIPS first 64-bit processor and actually one of the few 64-bit processors out there capable of running on a mobile device and run Android. This MIPS I6400 chip joins the MIPS Warrior family of processors which includes the Warrior M-class of entry-level MIPS cores for embedded and microcontroller applications and the Warrior P-class of high-performance MIPS processors. Based upon how Imagination Technologies is placing this new I-class of processors, it appears
There Is No Sign Of ARM Slowing Down
ARM announced the signing of the 50th licensing agreement for its ARMv8-A technology, which includes support for 64-bit computing. While ARM did not disclose the 27 companies that have signed thus far, it has mentioned that its silicon partners include all of the top ten companies who sell application processors for smartphones, nine of the top ten application processor companies for tablets, four of the top five companies that provide chips for consumer electronics, four of the top five companies that provide chips for enterprise networking and servers along with eight silicon vendors from Greater China. In short, most of the big names in the
AMD Announces 64-bit ARM Opteron A1100-Series Dev Kit
AMD [NYSE:AMD] has announced that they are making available their AMD Opteron A1100-Series developer kit to developers, using the company’s own 64-bit ARM A57-based CPU codenamed “Seattle”. These developer kits, which will be priced at a hefty $2,999 dollars will enable developers of enterprise applications to code their applications for AMD’s 64-bit ARM server processors. AMD is currently the only company offering a full ARM server stack that includes software, hardware, and platform support. They’re the biggest company currently in the ARM server market, but that is both a good thing and a bad thing. Its good because they technically don’t have many competitors, yet, but
New 9" Tegra K1 64-bit Nexus 9 Tablet Coming from HTC?
So, everyone was expecting LG to make the next Google Nexus tablet, or maybe ASUS since they’ve also been one of the part Nexus tablet partners. However, you’d be wrong to assume either of those are correct since the next Nexus 9 tablet looks to be coming from HTC and it looks like its going to be a real competitor. The new Nexus 9″ tablet codenamed Volantis (not to be confused with Lady Gaga’s flying dress) was outed by Android Police today with a full image and spec drop of the device. And based upon what we’re seeing, it looks like Nvidia booted Qualcomm out of
Adobe Creative Cloud Getting New Features & Hardware June 18th
Adobe appears to be in a bit of a crisis with what they want the public to know. A few days ago, Adobe announced that they would be making a big announcement on June 18th about the new Creative Cloud for 2014. This announcement detailed a lot of things that Adobe planned to announce for or related to the new Creative Cloud for 2014, but then they moderated their post today and removed all of the details about what they planned to show. Thanks to Google’s Cache and the Google Cache Browser, it was fairly easy to go back and get the details that Adobe
AMD's New AMDextrous Strategy, Skybridge and Custom 64-bit ARM Cores
AMD has long been pressured by many of their investors, industry analysts, and various press to show some more core innovation. Well, today, AMD announced their core innovation update in San Francisco and streamed it online as well. The company came out with all their major executives, including current CEO Rory Read as MC, to talk about their new ambidextrous approach, combining their expertise with x86 with their new found interest in ARM, especially in embedded and servers. The update itself focused around the official announcement that AMD will be licensing ARM’s v8 architecture for their own ARM CPU cores, which comes as little surprise
Qualcomm Announces 20nm Snapdragon 808 and Snapdragon 810 64-Bit Chips
Qualcomm has been fairly quiet about their high-end ambitions after what is expected to follow the soon-to-launch Snapdragon 805 chipset. The Snapdragon 805 is Qualcomm’s chip that will likely ship in devices next quarter and is marketed by Qualcomm as their 4K chip with the Adreno 420 GPU. Now, even though the Snapdragon 805 (APQ8084) is a very powerful chip, it lacks 64-bit capability and doesn’t have an integrated modem, requiring a separate modem like Qualcomm’s 20nm MDM9x35 to enable cellular capability. It also sports an improved Krait CPU with a Krait 450 CPU compared to the Snapdragon 801 and 800’s Krait 400. However, it
Nvidia plans to bridge the 32-bit and 64-bit divide
When you are designing a workstation product, you’re not designing what your engineers want, but rather what the customer will buy. Workstation market is much more conservative than consumer one, and a lot of design changes have to be made in order to accomodate this, still much smaller market. Currently, the biggest headache in the workstation world is 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. While the FX community already went for 64-bit operating system, a lot of organizations are resisting to change and remain in the 32-bit world with its applications and broad compatibility. This was a big challenge for both ATI and Nvidia, who went
Nvidia makes a “stupid” call with brilliant RapiHD
With the release of Adobe Creative Studio 4, Elemental Technologies finally launched their own RapiHD CUDA-accelerator for Premiere Pro. As team of users of Sony 1080p and RED One (4K FTW!) camera, my guys expected that RapiHD will be a brilliant add-on to my configuration consisted out of two 4-core Intel Xeons@3 GHz, brilliant ASUS Skulltrail-lite motherboard and Nvidia Quadro FX 4600 SDI. SDI is a paramount when working with HD signal and RED camera, since it tremendously speeds up the workflow. I am first to admit that I am not exactly at home with video production per se, but I well know what to
Best buy introduces custom design notebooks from HP, Toshiba
In a bid to win more customers, Best Buy introduced Blue label series of products. Starting with two notebooks, BB is introducing products that were designed based upon customer feedback. BB received feedback from their sales spots and decided to do something about it. It seems that most customers demanded discrete graphics card, 4GB of memory, baclkit keyboard improved battery life and a 64-bit operating system. Said – done. First two Blue label products are HP Pavilion dv3510nr and Toshiba Satellite E105-S1402. Both notebooks come with similar features and boast more than four hours of battery life. Personally, I like HP more due to integrated
