It is one thing to watch Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton take on the famous Grand Hotel Hairpin bend by Fairmont Hotel in Monte Carlo’s Formula 1 track while sipping on lemonade and sitting comfortably on your couch. It is another to be sitting in the car itself, calculating every inch of that upcoming u-shaped curve, braking and accelerating at the most precise of times. Ever wonder what that’s like? Well, put your lemonade down and get your VR headset on, because one San Francisco-based company is doing just that – placing you directly in the driver’s seat. It is just the Formula E circuit

“I think there are lot of things that can be done around gaming, VR [Virtual Reality] and AR [Augmented Reality].” said Greg Maffei, CEO of Liberty Media. “There’s an enormous amount of video feed and data that we have about the races that we are already capturing that we are not in any way processing incrementally for the dedicated fan, or opportunities around things like gambling.” When such words come from the co-owner of FIA Formula E Championship, and the new owner of Formula One World Championship i.e. F1 it is clear that the way how we consume sports is going to change in the future
Can Virtually Live Replace Pay Per View Television?
Couple of years ago, we witnessed a trend of “cutting the cord”, i.e. canceling the cable subscription in the United States. Google Ships Five Million Cardboard VR Sets
Interest in any emerging technology can only be measured with tangible sales results. While Oculus, HTC, Microsoft and Sony generate most of the hype and consequentially, receive most of media coverage – a lot is riding on the wave of more affordable devices. For example, there are over 100 VR manufacturers in mainland China, and even ASUS and GigaByte are preparing to introduce their own VR HMD’s created in collaboration with some of those vendors. But even these upcoming VR devices will be in the $100-200 range; too high-end for mass, multi-dozen-million sales. We reported recently that Lenovo India sold 10,000 Phone + VR Headset kits in less than one

Over 60,000 people showed up to se the last race, and over 1.9 million people watched it in UK alone. Given that 60,000 viewers were more that some F1 races experienced, expectations are really high in preparations for the second season, where many restrictions were lifted off and eight of ten teams are now competing as constructors.
