Google Misses Badly on Q3 2014 Earnings
Google’s earnings for the third quarter of 2014 disappointed Wall Street and investors’ expectations as they missed on earnings per share.
Twitter to Add a Buy Now Button
Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) today announced that it would be adding a Buy Now button to Twitter, specifically on mobile. This is yet another move by Twitter to increase their profitability through finding more revenue making opportunities, this follows its partnering with Amazon to tag purchases on Twitter back in May for adding to an Amazon cart. If anything, this Buy Now button is an evolution of that idea, making Twitter the direct point of sale instead of trying to send you somewhere else to buy the item. Twitter has hundreds of millions of users and if it makes this work right, it may actually have figured out eCommerce through social media
Twitter Reports Stellar Earnings, Stock Jumps 35%
Twitter [NYSE:TWTR] today reported their earnings for the second quarter of the year, beating out all expectations and further raising their outlook for the next quarter and the whole year as well. The company reported that revenue rose to $312.2 million, up from $139.3 million a year ago, more than double. This is a significant beat of where Twitter had guided as well, as they had guided $270 to $280 million while the Thomson Reuters analyst poll had the average expectation at $283.1 million. However, the company still posted a GAAP net loss of $144.6 million, but most of this has to do with a
LG Posts Record Quarter, Ships Nearly 15 Million Phones
LG’s turnaround appears to have completed with today’s earnings results. According to LG’s very own earnings announcement for the past quarter (2Q 2014), the company shipped 14.5 million smartphones, a record high for the company. This is primarily driven by the fact that LG finally knows how to not only make a great smartphone, but also how to market it and sell it to consumers, something they kind of lacked with previous phones like the LG Optimus G and the LG G2. Both the Optimus G and G2 were fantastic devices and pretty much owned the competition whenever they were introduced. However, with the G3,
Qualcomm: Record 3Q 2014 Earnings, Reaffirms Guidance
Qualcomm just announced their earnings for the fiscal third quarter of 2014 which includes the calendar second quarter of 2014, and their earnings were strong as ever. Qualcomm reported $2.24 billion in profit on $6.81 billion in revenues, this represents a 9 percent growth in revenue year over year as well as a 7 percent growth over the previous quarter. Profits also grew a whopping 42 percent year over year and 14 percent sequentially, squashing investors’ worries that Qualcomm’s caution last year about flatter revenues might affect profitability. Diluted EPS was $1.31, up 46 percent year over year and 15 percent sequentially. These earnings figures
IRS Denying Open Source Projects Non-Profit Status
Apparently the IRS has taken the stance that Open Source projects, that are either created through the collaborations of individuals or corporations (which the government increasingly considers people) are not eligible for non-profit status. This news comes as the OpenStack foundation and Yorba foundation have both recently been denied by the IRS for non-profit status. While it may be true that some open source projects may not necessarily be deserving of non-profit status, most of these projects are run by a community of people and/or companies that come together for a common cause. They also make most of their software free and open to the public
HTC Posts a Profit With The Help of The HTC One M8
HTC today announced their earnings for the second fiscal quarter of 2014, Q2 2014. They posted a quarterly profit of NT$2.26 billion ($76.5 million), or NT$2.74 ($0.09 USD) per share on $65.06 billion NT ($2.18 billion USD). HTC’s shares were up as high as 4% on Taipei’s exchange trading this morning (Taipei time). Many people were interested to see how well HTC would perform because of their new HTC One M8 which we’ve reviewed. Based upon their current performance, it seems clear that HTC’s moves clearly resulted in improved profitability and a change in the company’s tide of losses from the previous quarters. Granted, they
GoPro Files a $100 Million IPO, Solidly Profitable
As we had earlier reported on rumors of a GoPro Hero 4(K), GoPro was expected to be filing for an IPO prior to the release of their GoPro Hero 4(K). This followed a rumor that they had secretly filed for an IPO only days after hiring themselves a new CFO. So, it comes as little surprise that they officially filed for an IPO with the SEC today to the tune of $100 million. Thanks to this filing we now know how well GoPro has been doing as a company over the course of the past few years. In 2011, GoPro had reported a profit of
Intel Reports First Quarter 2014 Earnings, Signs of Stability
Intel’s first quarter earnings for 2014 were for the most part fairly tepid. Sure, they were able to post an earnings of $0.38 per share on $12.8 billion in revenue, however this only beat analyst’s fairly conservative expectations of $0.37 per share by $0.01. On $12.8 billion in revenue, Intel showed operating income of $2.5 billion and net income of $1.9 billion. Intel’s net income for Q1 2014 was down 5% over the same period a year ago, nothing to cheer about but still much better than previous declines. They also saw an increase in revenue of about $200 million, even though there was a
AMD reports $1.78B revenue, records first profit in years (non-GAAP)
On Thursday, AMD reported its Q3’2008 results and the company managed to “Experience Black” (marketing slogan behind 4870X2). When we look at overall (non-GAAP) numbers, AMD filed $1.776 billion revenue and a profit of 80 million dollars. This was the first filed profit in seven quarters, and in a way, Hector J. Ruiz kept its promise of AMD becoming profitable by Q3’08. However, the results that Wall Street calculates are GAAP ones, and without that one-time revenue of $191 million (selling equipment to JSC Angstrem, as I first reported here), the company filed a net loss of $67 million on a revenue of $1.56 billion.
Atom helps Intel to score a big one, beats expectations
In a stark contrast to conservative projections by analysts, Intel (stock: INTC) announced that the company achieved a revenue of $10.22 billion, beating the estimates. Chipzilla achieved clear two billion dollar profit in Q3’08, or 35 cents per share. The reason for this 12% jump in profits is no other than Intel Atom, chip that reportedly costs only $8 to make, giving Intel additional $200 million in its Q3 revenue. Without Atom and associated chipsets, their revenue would dip below 10 billion. This only goes to show that Intel executed properly and went for the segment of market that has just started to expand. Cheap
Time for earning season madness is here!
In the light of world economy going bonkers, we have entered two really interesting weeks. Intel will submit its Q3 results after the market closes on Tuesday, while AMD will follow suit on Thursday. I’ve received a preview for both companies from Wedbush Morgan Securities, and in this post you can read estimates researched by Patrick Wang and his assistant Michael Lucarelli. According to Wedbush Morgan, we can expect “weak 3Q results towards the lower end of guidance as the majority of semi companies have not pre-announced but were most likely impacted by the well-documented macro environment.” With global economy being in chaos, it is
