Report: AMD Cuts 500 Jobs To Save Costs

Advanced Micro Devices, a chip designer headquartered in Sunnyvale, California (and Austin, Texas), is cutting 500 jobs to cut costs (5% of its global workforce). The move is expected to bring the headcount down to under 9,000 employees, right in about the same number of employees as one of its competitors, NVIDIA Corporation. For anyone familiar with the processor market, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. The company has been struggling to make competitive products over the past couple of years, with even highly innovative products often not being in stock due to low availability. The chip maker is struggling to keep up with its main competitors, with Intel currently

T-Mobile CEO Says iPhone 6S Pre-Orders Up 30% From Last Generation

According to T-Mobile CEO John Legere, the mobile company has seen an increase of pre-orders in United States for the Apple iPhone 6S. The increase is stated at around 30 percent, compared to those for the last generation iPhone that was released last year. The claim was made by Legere himself, when he announced a special trade-in plan for people who want an iPhone 6S and already own the previous-generation phones. This enables users to obtain the new iPhone 6S through a lease for just $5 per month or, if they own an iPhone 5S, do the same, and pay $10 per month. That was

BMW Group achieves steady sales growth in June

For June 2015 there have been rather positive results for BMW in terms of sales. BMW Group sales shipped 208,813 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brand vehicles in June. This is an overall increase of 8% compared to the same time period last year. The company also recorded its best ever first half of the year sales with an increase of 7.8% to total 1,099,748 vehicles delivered. This is a strong pointer to the state of the automotive industry, specially with the slowdown of Chinese market and the situation in Russia concerning the political situation. BMW has also revamped a few of their current models with the LCI

Tesla Motors Delivers 52% More Vehicles In Q2 2015

According to information released by the company, 11,507 Model S were delivered to its owners over the second quarter 2015. This was a new record for the electric car maker in terms of most cars delivered in a quarter and represents an approximate 52% increase over Q2 last year. While the number is rather small (compared to traditional car makers) it still represents a nice bump in the all-electric car business. Furthermore, it speaks a lot about the profitability of the company, as (unofficially), the average sales price of Model S is high $87,370, which means the company made over a billion USD – approx

Twitter to Add a Buy Now Button

Twitter Logo Large

Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) today announced that it would be adding a Buy Now button to Twitter, specifically on mobile. This is yet another move by Twitter to increase their profitability through finding more revenue making opportunities, this follows its partnering with Amazon to tag purchases on Twitter back in May for adding to an Amazon cart. If anything, this Buy Now button is an evolution of that idea, making Twitter the direct point of sale instead of trying to send you somewhere else to buy the item. Twitter has hundreds of millions of users and if it makes this work right, it may actually have figured out eCommerce through social media

LG Posts Record Quarter, Ships Nearly 15 Million Phones

LG Logo

LG’s turnaround appears to have completed with today’s earnings results. According to LG’s very own earnings announcement for the past quarter (2Q 2014), the company shipped 14.5 million smartphones, a record high for the company. This is primarily driven by the fact that LG finally knows how to not only make a great smartphone, but also how to market it and sell it to consumers, something they kind of lacked with previous phones like the LG Optimus G and the LG G2. Both the Optimus G and G2 were fantastic devices and pretty much owned the competition whenever they were introduced. However, with the G3,

T-Mobile Overtakes Sprint as No.3 Buyer of Smartphones in US

T-Mobile Logo

Since most people’s contracts are usually 2 years long, you don’t usually see any significant movements of subscribers from one carrier to another. They happen slowly and quarterly, after all, it would take at least 8 quarters for a company to theoretically lose all of their subscribers if every single person wanted to leave. So, it comes as little surprise that Sprint still holds the numbers 3 spot in terms of subscribers when compared to T-Mobile. Based on T-Mobile’s last earnings call, they ended the first quarter of this year up 2.4 million with nearly 50 million customers, coming ever closer to Sprint’s 54 million.

GoPro Files a $100 Million IPO, Solidly Profitable

GoPro Cam

As we had earlier reported on rumors of a GoPro Hero 4(K), GoPro was expected to be filing for an IPO prior to the release of their GoPro Hero 4(K). This followed a rumor that they had secretly filed for an IPO only days after hiring themselves a new CFO. So, it comes as little surprise that they officially filed for an IPO with the SEC today to the tune of $100 million. Thanks to this filing we now know how well GoPro has been doing as a company over the course of the past few years. In 2011, GoPro had reported a profit of

Xbox One Drops Kinect, Goes Down to $399

Xbox One

For those of you that didn’t hop on the Titanfall Xbox One Edition deal for $399, it looks like there’s a new way to get ahold of an Xbox One for $399. Microsoft appears to have gotten rid of the requirement to buy a Kinect with an Xbox one for the wholesome price of $499 and are selling just the Xbox One alone for $399. Obviously, this made the Xbox One a solid 25% more expensive than the PlayStation 4 and as a result will naturally mean fewer sales. Microsoft seriously believed that because they bundled the Kinect with the Xbox One it would somehow

PlayStation 4 Sales Surpass 7 Million

Sony Playstation 4

Sony’s popular PlayStation 4 console appears to be continuing its amazing momentum in terms of sales as Sony, the console’s maker, has announced that as of yesterday the company has shipped over 7 million units of the popular console. Since the console’s launch in mid november, only 5 months ago, they have managed to average over 1 million console sales per month. This does take into account the 1 million sold on the first day, but even if you take that number out, it puts the PS4 at 6 million units in 5 months, which still means over a million PlayStation 4 consoles sold per

Spore and Warhammer Online rule the sales charts

I’ve been following NPD Sales charts for ages now, and it was always interesting to see how long can a title hold on them. Blizzard and EA/Maxis are long standing legends – in the past eight years, there haven’t been a weekly or monthly sales chart where at least one title from these companies didn’t occupy spot or two. NPD Group decided to combine their weekly charts into monthly ones, probably for easier tracking – and making annual reports will be much more easier. But getting back on the subject, sales results for North America are quite interesting: Top 5 PC Games for September 2008
