A year ago, we revealed that the U.S. State Department blocked the further sales of Intel Xeon and Xeon Phi processors to Chinese institutions, most notably the Tianhe-2 supercomputer. USA Embargo Cannot Stop China: Tianhe-2 Supercomputer Keeps #1

Couple of months ago, we exclusively reported that the U.S. government blocked Intel from selling its products to Chinese supercomputer firms such as Inspur, responsible for building the Tianhe-2 supercomputer. Originally, Tianhe-2 was planned to expand all the way to almost 100,000 Xeon processors and Xeon Phi co-processors, targeting to beat the 100 PFLOPS barrier. Initial deployment included 4,096 Chinese Galaxy FT-1500 processors (Chinese SPARC) and 16,000 processor nodes with two 12-core Xeon E2692 processors and three Xeon Phi 31S1P co-processors for a grand total of 3.12 million cores. Nvidia's Jetson TK1 is shipping, is it a 'Supercomputer'?

So last week, Nvidia launched a CUDA Vision Challenge that challenges developers to propose applications that might properly utilize the Jetson TK1’s embedded ‘Supercomputer’ capability for unique or novel purposes. Nvidia announced that they would be giving away 50 Jetson TK1 development boards to the top 50 proposals submitted by developers and the winners would be announced on May 20th. Scientists Use TACC Supercomputers to Find Link Between Cancer and Alzheimer's

So, remember when TACC (Texas Advanced Computing Center) built the Stampede supercomputer using VERY preferred pricing from Intel for using Intel Xeon Phi cards back in 2012? Well, that Stampede supercomputer in conjunction with the Lonestar Supercomputer at TACC are responsible for some pretty interesting research.
