Verizon tests 5G network at the Super Bowl through VR

Time’s arrow never stops marching forward, and neither does technological advancements. Verizon has pushed the envelope at the Super Bowl, mixing “5G” mobile network alongside VR to do some pretty incredible things, even by 2018 standards. What is 5G and what is it capable of? 5G, as its name implies, is the 5th generation of mobile network technologies. While 4G offers speeds comparable to modern home Internet connections, 5G offers speeds and latencies equal to or better than these connections. Once it actually enters the market, different networks will have different performance under 5G. However, this should lead to across-the-board improvements in mobile network performance.

Catalina Sea Ranch Dips into Technology

Marine biologists studying offshore aquaculture, such as the Catalina Sea Ranch mussel farm, need real-time data to conduct collaborative and transparent research. Catalina Sea Ranch (CSR) is the first offshore shellfish Ranch in US Federal Waters. It is using technology to monitor the environment and provide security surveillance. CSR uses a buoy staged with Verizon equipment to collect a variety of marine data. The data is sent over Verizon’s 4G LTE network to a database running on top of Verizon’s cloud technology. 650,000 Comment on FCC's Net Neutrality Rules

Nearly 650,000 people have left comments on the FCC’s website regarding their proposed Net Neutrality rules, which were proposed roughly 2 months ago. The comments have been open since May 15th, and will be closed on July 15th, likely with over 650,000 comments on the topic, many of which are criticizing the FCC for not taking a strong enough stance to protect consumers. The FCC’s very own Chairman Tom Wheeler even tweeted about the milestone on Friday, reminding people to continue to leave their comments. We’ve received about 647k #netneutrality comments so far. Gov't Sent Verizon 149,000 Data Requests So Far This Year

Even though the year is barely half over, the government has already sent Verizon 149,000 requests for clients’ data this year. This is a part of the company’s second ever transparency report which basically reports to the public how much information they’re being forced to hand over, or willingly handing over as part of a cooperation program with the government. German Government Ditches Verizon Amid NSA Fears

The German government has announced that they will be switching away from Verizon for internet services as an ISP for the German government. They noted that the reasons for this decision had to do with increased demands on the network and the prevalence of the NSA in Verizon’s business.
