AMD A10-7800 and A8-7600 Launched: Better Performance at Lower Cost


AMD has launched two new APUs in the Kaveri series, both of which are targeted at mainstream consumers and come with price cuts and better lower power consumption.

First up is the twelve-core (four CPU cores + eight GPU cores) A10-7800, which offers the same set of features like HSA, hUMA, GCN and Mantle as the A10-7850K, but at lower frequencies (3.7 GHz to 3.5 GHz). The turbo frequency for the four 28-nm Steamroller cores is at 3.9 GHz, a mere 100 MHz lower than that of the A10-7850K. 

The eight onboard Radeon cores are clocked at 654 MHz base and 720 MHz boost, and offer 512 shader processors. Memory-wise, the A10-7800 can handle DDR3 up to 2133 MHz. The lowered frequencies has allowed AMD to enable TDP customization for the APU, which means that the 65W A10-7800 can function in a 45W mode by changing the BIOS settings. Switching to the 45W mode lowers the base frequency by around 450 MHz, although turbo frequency is unaffected at the lowered TDP. 

If the $155 asking price for the A10-7800 is not alluring it itself, AMD is further incentivising the new models by bundling a free game with all purchases. After buying the APU, you can choose from either Thief, Sniper Elite III or Murdered Soul Suspect. The offer is valid in North America, Latin America, EMEA and Asia Pacific/Japan.

Making its much-awaited debut is the A8-7600, which offers four CPU cores and six GPU cores. Offering 384 shader processors, a CPU base clock of 3.1 GHz with 3.8 GHz turbo and HSA on a 65W TDP, the A8-7600 is priced very aggressively at just $105 and is a worthy successor to the Richland-based A8-6600K. 

With the launch of the new APUs, AMD has managed to eke out significant performance wins compared to last generation cores. The 45W A8-7600 is able to deliver gaming performance similar to that of a 100W Richland CPU, and the availability of HSA on an entry-level APU signifies AMD’s intention of bringing the feature to its entire product offerings in the future.
