Nintendo Direct Wii U And 3DS Announcement Wrap-Up

Amiibo Wave 4

These new Amiibos will accompany the current lineup, but given how demand has soared, they’ll likely be snatched up as soon as they hit the shelves.

The new Direct also reveals the new wave of Super Smash Bros. Amiibo figurines along with a release date, signalling that the Amiibo craze isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Amiibo Wave 4 will be released on May 29 across various retailers, and include:

  • Charizard
  • Greninja
  • Pac-Man
  • Robin
  • Wario
  • Marth
  • Jigglypuff
  • Ness

Ness has been confirmed as a GameStop exclusive, and the store received such high demand for the figure that it broke their online store. Suffice it to say that stores across the country are getting bombarded with pre-orders and request, so they’ll likely be sold out and snatched up.

Amiibo Wave 5 - 6

Nintendo outlines plans for its upcoming Amiibo lineup for the later months.

Future Amiibos include Palutena and Pit for a July release, and Wave 5 consisting of Olimar, Zero Suit Samus, Bowser Jr. Ganondorf and Doctor Mario. Some of these will likely be retailer exclusive just like Ness.

Lucas and Metwo will also join the new Amiibo lineup “sometime in the future”.

Nintendo 3DS 2DS NFC Amiibo Scanner

The new NFC scanner will bring Amiibo functionality to 3DS and 2DS handhelds, and will release Fall 2015.

Nintendo will also be releasing a standalone NFC scanner to coincide with a new Animal Crossing game (scroll below for more information).

The scanner will allow existing 3DS and 2DS owners to get in on the Amiibo scanning fun and bridges the gap of one of the New 3DS XL’s premium functions. Hopefully the scanners will be adequate demand and won’t be sold out instantly like the Wii U Gamecube Controller adapters.

Amiibo Tap Greatest Bits

Amiibo Tap Greatest Bits lets you try out demos of Virtual Console games just by tapping your Amiibos, making it like “swapping NES cartridges”.

Nintendo also announced a brand new free Wii U download that lets players unlock demo scenes with select amiibos.

For example if you tap the Mario amiibo using the new Amiibo Tap Greatest Bits, you’ll get to sample a three-minute demo playthrough of a random scene in Super Mario World. Players can re-tap their amiibos to sample a variety of scenes, and it looks to be a nifty way to try out the games before you buy them on the eShop.

Amiibo Tap Greatest Bits Games

Gamers can try out different 3 minute demos just by swapping Amiibos, offering a different scene every time.

Also it looks like amiibos randomly unlock demos. For example, scanning a Mario amiibo that’s owned by a different player might unlock Super Metroid on SNES, or it might unlock the original NES version of Super Mario Bros.

Iwata affirms that there will be “many classics to sample”, including SNES/NES and even GameBoy VC games like Wario’s Woods, F-Zero, Super Mario World, Excitebike, Super Metroid, Kirby’s Adventure, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Dr. Mario and many more.

Amiibo Tap Greatest Bits will be available as a free Wii U eShop download this spring.
