This isn’t the first time Microsoft is giving away free stuff to owners of its Windows 10 Mobile smartphones. A few weeks ago, everyone who pre-ordered Lumia 950 XL smartphone received a free Display Dock. Now, the software/hardware giant from Redmond is giving away something more interesting, a free year of Office 365 subscription to owners of Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. A rather nice way to say thanks for choosing the company’s flagship smartphones, isn’t it?
In case you were wondering, the Office 365 Personal subscription is now reduced to $59.99, making this a rather interesting offer. Customers that are eligible for the subscription are all those that purchased a Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL between November 20th, 2015 and June 30th, 2016. The dates in question aren’t a coincidence; Starting April 1st, 2016 (not a joke) Microsoft will require all Windows 10 Mobile smartphone running Continuum to have an active Office 365 subscription in order to enable editing of Office documents.
In order to use this offer, you must perform the following steps: navigate to the Lumia Offers app on your smartphone, and choose the “1-year Office 365” selection from the available offers. In five days time of singing up, you will receive a promotional code from Microsoft to unlock your free one-year subscription. The code can only be used once, so pay attention and be careful where you enter this. Upon activation, you will have a full year of Microsoft Office 365 services for free, and that includes OneDrive cloud storage (now limited to 1TB). All in all, an interesting development in a (tiny) Lumia world. Somehow we feel Microsoft will have to do much more in order to capture more market share, which is way below Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS, but also significantly higher than Samsung’s Tizen, Mozilla’s failed Firefox OS and other irrelevant players.
