One of key detractors for a complete immersion into virtual reality experience is the presence of cables which hinder your digital movement. Hence, the question for the VR industry is… what is freedom and how one becomes free? If you ask that question to someone from MSI, he or she would just smile and gave you something… backpack alike. You would than realize that suddenly it’s possible to have your cake and eat it too. It is possible to hunt dragons next to your sleeping girlfriend or boyfriend without waking her (or him). Actually, not just one pack but several big, ugly packs of dragons.
What comes next is to ride off into sunset – what an awesome bag this is. During the Tokyo Game Show 2016, MSI announced “world’s first-ever VR Backpack,” the MSI VR One. We view this proclamation as somewhat funny, given that HP announced its OMEN backpack in May, followed by Alienware on E3 2016 (June) and XMG from Schenker Technologies announced their product on Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. Then again, MSI is the only backpack available for purchase.
Weighing in just under 3.6kg, MSI VR One gives you 1.5+ hours of untethered VR gaming with a possibility of non-stop VR experiences achieved by hot swapping battery, and all of that under 41dBA. That means you will not hear it at any time while hunting those dragons. Not to mention that that “bag” looks as what really sexy piece of hardware should look like.
MSI VR One features two battery packs without which the VR One would weigh mere 2.2 kilos, or 4.8 pounds. Hot swap battery design makes it possible to play hours of VR games non-stop. One of most portable and mobile solution up to day which removes the current VR experience limitations of having to stay close to the PC and the monitor due to cables connected.
MSI VR One is fully optimized for HTC Vive, but also accepts other headsets. Expansion options include HDMI port, Mini DisplayPort, ultra-speed Thunderbolt 3 (through the universal USB/Thunderbolt Type-C connector) that supports highest bandwidth for dual 2K displays per eye. There are four USB 3.0 ports, and the duty of being the graphic powerhouse behind this magical backpack goes to Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070.
There is also special software called “MSI Dragon Centre”. It allows users to control and manage unique MSI gaming features – SHIFT Technology adjusts the performance and the fan speed for the best VR experience. Dragon Centre also allows to monitor the hardware status in details from your cell phone. If you’re interested to develop content for the VR One backpack, get in touch with MSI and secure your position in the queue.
What about freedom? You know it now… some are free sooner than the others.
