Discord Discredits Non-Fungible tokens (NFT) integration

Discord NFT

Discord’s CEO had recently announced plans to integrate Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) into their platform. The integration of NFT’s would be a big step for the gaming industry and could lead to major changes in how we interact, perceive and use the blockchain.

The enthusiasm sparked amongst the community was eventually squashed to pieces when Citron, Discord’s CEO announced on Twitter that they will not be moving forward with the initial proposal at least not for now. The announcement triggered a firestorm on the Discord subreddit as well as many people on Twitter.

The speculative nature of NFTs and their environmental effect were both criticized in recent top posts on the Discord subreddit. One popular post expressly requests that Discord developers not support NFTs. Other Reddit postings and tweets urge consumers to cancel or receive a refund from their NitroBoosters. The reasoning behind the Nitro cancelation is simple, a significant drop in revenue will force the leadership to rethink their jokes before cracking them next time or simply enforce their desires and bring back NFTs.

In response to the community backlash, Citron posted another Tweet thanking fans for sharing their thoughts and said that Discord “As much as I want to support NFTs, I also have to acknowledge that there are many reasonable concerns around it. We will be focusing on protecting users from spam, scams, and fraud instead.”

So far, NFT’s have proven to be safe with use cases of these tokenized assets are already being implemented by many companies such as CryptoKitties. Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT) are one of the most popular applications of blockchain, and this teaser from Discord did accomplish one thing — Create short-lived excitement for the growing community around them. Perhaps that was the goal?
