UL (Futuremark) Launches PCMark 10

Several years ago, the testing giant UL acquired a legend of PC benchmarking, Futuremark Oy. Fast forward to Computex Taipei 2017, and the release of what is perhaps the most important productivity benchmark on the planet, one that influences government and business purchases, as well as influence the consumer. Unlike Intel-related BAPCo, no one can doubt the sheer lack of bias coming from UL. Ladies and gentlemen, the time has finally come for “PCMark 10”. As the name says, PCMark is Futuremark’s family of benchmarks designed to measure overall system performance through tests that are based on real-world applications and activities.  Given the number of

AMD’s Next Generation GPU to Feature 384-bit GDDR6 Memory?

Last year, Micron collaborated with NVIDIA and brought forward GDDR5X memory, with 2.5 GHz QDR clock i.e. “10Gbps per pin” achieving record bandwidth per pin. With GTX 1080 Ti and TITAN Xp, Micron and NVIDIA went 10% up and reached 11Gbps, with some lucky owners able to reach 3GHz QDR i.e. “12Gbps per pin”. That all is set to change with SK Hynix launching the GDDR6 memory. Debuting on AMD (and NVIDIA) graphics cards in about six-to-eight months from now, GDDR6 replaces GDDR5 and GDDR5X, bringing great times for improvments for GPUs and FPGAs. SK Hynix introduced the world’s fastest 8Gb (i.e. 1GB) Graphics DDR6 DRAM chip. Its operating

Intel Reacts to AMD, Accelerates New Processors and Platforms

Following what was expected, yet still surprising launch of AMD RYZEN, and lackluster performance from its broken “Tick-Tock-Tock-Tock…” cadence refresh called “Kaby Lake”, Intel started to pull multiple moves in the background to react to the threats to their core business. Just like the rise of GPU was met with a multi-billion acquisition of Altera, whose combined x86-FPGA processors are still nowhere near the market launch, upcoming End of Life / Termination notice for Xeon Phi and rushed multi-billion acquisition of Mobileye… the reactions are starting to look chaotic and unplanned. Reliable sources report that Intel brought forward the launch of their 2017/18 platforms: two month

Intel in Trouble? Cancels Intel Developer Forum After 20 Years

Intel Developer Forum i.e. IDF traditionally was an event that ends the summer break and opens new opportunities to do business. However, over the past couple of years we’ve heard numerous stories that the company is charging too much for the exhibit space, and does not know where the focus is. At the same time, its public arms – Public Relations (PR) and Investor Relations (IR) departments started to retreat into themselves, becoming more and more unavailable to the members of media, new media channels as well as industry analysts. Today, the biggest confirmation of “building a Wall around the company” came true, as Intel Developer

Samsung Disables Google Daydream VR on Galaxy Phones

While Samsung always had a clear plan that Google and its Android are just some of operating systems the company ships their products with, the company never disabled features that come with Android… until now. When Samsung Galaxy S8 arrives on the market on April 21st, it will probably take the crown of the world’s most powerful Android smartphone on the market… facing a different situation. At the moment, compared to Google’s Daydream, Samsung’s Gear VR is more rounded and polished. However, users that opt for Oculus’s mobile i.e. GearVR platform won’t be able to use Google’s own VR platform, known as Daydream. Just like YouTube platform

Intel Can’t Hide Strategical Mistakes, AMD to Pounce?

If you would align your wristwatch to the sound of Intel’s tick tock, you would miss your important meeting. The launch of a new generation of processors represents a symbolic beginning of a new cycle and for Intel, “Kaby Lake” launch was everything but normal. First launching the Ultra-low Voltage parts (the U series), then the Desktop line-up and finally the mainstream notebook designs, with troublesome rumors about its enterprise, Xeon-branded counterpart. Kaby Lake is perhaps too focused on the processor power task rather than processor performance. A lullaby. The same story for the last six years continues. Admittedly, for the past 18 months there were whispers

New NVIDIA Quadro Family Plans to Heavily Monetize Pascal GPUs

NVIDIA’s scenario about the GeForce / Quadro / Tesla line-up experienced a lot of turnover over the past couple of years. The sequence of “launch as GeForce, downclock as Tesla, optimize and launch as Quadro,” changed into “launch as Tesla, optimize as GeForce and be reliable as Quadro”. With Pascal, story turned to be almost the same. NVIDIA introduced GP100 as Tesla in April 2016, followed with GP102 chip as Titan X (no longer branded as GeForce), Quadro P6000 and Tesla P40. At the same time, the GP104/106/107 did not experience the same sequence, with only GP104 debuting as Quadro P5000 and Tesla P40. Second day of

Virtuix Faces Problems and Does the Right Thing

Current situation with clumsy VR hardware and quite unpolished VR content is somewhat improving. Big money is being thrown on the table and the whole movement is being propelled forward. However, the goal of seamless experience is far away and only the strongest will endure until the finishing line. Virtuix is a relatively small company that came into the limelight several years ago, raising over a million dollars on Kickstarter. Virtuix is addressing one of the key obstacles for the immersion into the VR: Freedom of movement inside virtual presence. Motion sickness, room-scale space constraints and unnatural navigation schemes like teleportation that inherently break immersion and spoil the

HTC Enables Wireless Vive VR Design, New Features for 2017

While the second generation handsets from HTC and Oculus are getting shape hidden from the public eye, there are significant changes being announced or previewed for the upcoming Holiday season. The new controllers were ‘leaked’ a while ago, and should arrive as bundled and separate purchase (for people that have already purchased the Vive). Still, the biggest hurdle for the mass adoption of VR is, or it was, the necessity of a wired connection between the headset and computer. Headset must receive a very high bandwidth picture, so high that a signal from the computer to the headset had to be done by wire, using fastest

Does MSI Hold a Trump Card in Wireless VR Race?

Several weeks ago, MSI announced the MSI VR One backpack at the Tokyo Game Show. Unlike the competition, MSI also made an announcement about the future sales as well, launching into production during October. Originally intended for launch on October 30th, it took until middle of November to bring the availability of VR One into both North America and Europe. Truth to be told, the concept of a portable VR backpack is getting challenged by innovations such as the HTC/TPCast Wireless Gig (60GHz) concept product. The extent and efficiency of wireless data transfer between headset and PC’s has not yet been confirmed in practice. Nor how it

Intel Drones Fly Around the Campfire

There is dark and there is light. Fire. How long is it in human hands? Out there, at night, by the campfire. Magic of this entire, beautiful and sometimes dreadful world around us. Fire can put us in a bubble. Glittering stories that seem like they starting right there behind us, when we step into the darkness. Or perhaps silence by the campfire. Warmth and we with ourselves. How much today we have improved as people, become more noble than, lets say, Chinese people from the 12th century when they invented fireworks? Talk about the fire on the website dealing with the last cries of
