Microsoft Presenting Easy-To-Use Virtual Reality Experience

Microsoft is trying to nudge laptop and deskbound computers to interact with the three-dimensional world. The company on Tuesday started rolling out its latest bundle of updates to the Windows 10 operating system with features clustered around a bet that people will use their PCs to experience 3-D virtual worlds. Dubbed the Fall Creators Update, the package will make its way in waves to the more than 500 million Windows 10 users starting this week. Business users have the ability to delay updates. This technology “will forever unleash the creativity of people and organizations around the planet,” Alex Kipman, a Microsoft technical fellow working on Windows

Will “Windows as a Service” Model be successful for Microsoft?

Ever since Microsoft came out with the Windows 10, Redmond has been positioning this Operating System (OS) as the final direct release, with all the future versions being built off this foundation. Microsoft is trying to capture back market share which PCs have lost to mobile computing. Microsoft allowed for program compatibility and ecosystem support blunders with Windows 7 Mobile, Windows 8 Mobile, Windows 8 x86, and Windows 8 ARM (RT). The company let its Windows ecosystem to become fragmented, removed backwards compatibility, and many of its consumer developers moved away from Microsoft to focus on iOS and Android OS created by Apple and Google

Google is No More, Meet the Alphabet

‘Corporate restructuring’ is a term reserved typically for downsizing the company, selling or ‘spinning off’ corporate assets etc. However, when it comes to Google, something out of the blue happened – company leaders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin announced the birth of a new company, which will now own Google and all of its subsidiaries, as well as couple other companies. The duo announced the new company, called Alphabet (Alpha-bet meaning ‘the return for investor benchmark’) after the stock market closed. We suspect that the .xyz domain is going to become very popular for ‘follow the leader’ culture in Silicon Valley. As Larry wrote; “We did a lot of things that seemed crazy at

Microsoft Shutters Silicon Valley R&D Group As Nadella Cuts 2,100 Jobs

As Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) reaches the halfway point in its plan to cut 21,000 jobs, one of the victims of CEO Satya Nadella’s plan for a “leaner, smarter Microsoft” is the company’s esteemed Silicon Valley research group. According to reports — confirmed by tweets from the group’s employees — the 75-person lab will close and 50 positions will be eliminated. The remaining staff will be given the option to continue working for the company from Microsoft’s nearby Mountain View office. The focus of the lab prior to its close was distributed computing, and developing software to coordinate computing tasks across a network of machines. In

Microsoft to Lay Off 18,000, Most Ever in Company History

Microsoft Logo

As Microsoft’s Satya Nadella takes the reigns of the company, it appears as though he’s pushing for some serious blood letting from within the company that currently employs 125,000 people. This enormous 18,000 person layoff figure is mostly thanks to their acquisition of Nokia’s handset and mobile division, which brought on 25,000 people. Out of the 18,000 figure, nearly 12,500 will come from the former Nokia division that they had acquired, which is somewhat to be expected but also incredibly infuriating. Sure, there are going to be a decent amount of redundancies between Nokia and Microsoft, but this amounts to a 50% cut of all

RIP Nokia, Long Live Microsoft Devices Group

So, on Friday the Nokia devices and handset division was officially absorbed into Microsoft’s corporate structure and folded into Microsoft’s Devices Group. This officially marks the end of Nokia as an independent handset maker and completes the acquisition that Microsoft had made when they bought the handset division from Nokia (now NSN). It seems as though many of Nokia’s employees will be joining Microsoft today as Microsoft employees, however, the company will only be taking on approximately 25,000 employees from Nokia as they are still going to be leaving a few factories with Nokia due to legal limitations. Elop participated in a Q&A today as

Microsoft Board Names Satya Nadella CEO, Gates Steps Down as Chairman

Microsoft’s CEO search has finally ended with the appointment of Satya Nadella to CEO by Microsoft’s Board of Directors. They have finally selected someone to replace Steve Ballmer after the sudden and unexpected announcement of his departure. Microsoft’s CEO search started with people like Ford’s current CEO Allan Mulally and Qualcomm’s soon-to-be CEO Steve Mollenkopf, who actually got the position earlier than anyone had expected because of Microsoft’s offer to make him CEO. Qualcomm obviously couldn’t let that happen so instead they promoted Mollenkopf from COO to CEO earlier than anyone would have expected. There are some very interesting parallels between the two companies but
