AMD Launches Polaris Refresh, Wants to Make World VR Ready

After a series of leaks, AMD finally launched a refresh – or a rebrand – or their Polaris GPU product family. Some minor tweaks enabled Polaris 10 became Polaris 20, and so on, and so forth. The products launching today are Radeon RX 550, 560, 570 and 580. As AMD states, the new line-up is designed to further reduce the barrier of entry to VR capable i.e. “VR Ready” hardware, enable performance at higher resolutions such as 2560×1440 or 3440×1440 etc. Gamers should be able to stream their titles, and achieve great frame rate in the most played titles of today and hopefully tomorrow. According to AMD,

Sofa Sports and the Rise of Live Gaming

Just two decades ago, if somebody prophesized that reality TV would have the lion’s share of airtime on some channels, a job posting for a soothsayer wouldn’t be too far behind. There’s something bizarre about tuning in to watch others do things we’re capable of doing ourselves, not so much the pro sports of this world but the bundling everybody in the same house (Real World) expanded to sitting on sofas (Big Brother) or partying (Jersey Shore), and the arguing that typifies an hour with the Kardashians. Thus, the question present itself – are eSports and the popular forms of entertainment – actual sports themselves? Twitch

AR and VR Investments Are Accelerating

1968 was a year widely known for hippie culture, green smoke, free love etc. That year saw San Francisco hosting not just the hippies and free love, but a very significant presentation was held. The author was Doug Engelbart and his presentation became known as “The Mother of All Demos”. Instead of standing at a podium, Mr. Engelbart sat in a custom designed console, where he drove his presentation through the NLS computer residing 30 miles away in his research lab at the Stanford Research Institute. From the remote location, Mr. Engelbart transported images into a large projection screen overhead, flipping seamlessly between his presentation outline

Twitch is probably best known for its game streaming service, allowing gamers to broadcast their gameplay on a number of platforms to millions of viewers. Now the company, which is owned by mammoth online retailer Amazon, has launched a streaming service (TV channel) dedicated to serving up… food! To kick things off, Twitch Creative has launched a Julia Child marathon, broadcasting all 201 episodes of The French Chef that were originally aired on PBS. “Since the launch of Twitch Creative just five months ago, we have seen some amazing things created live on streams,” writes Noreen McInnis. “From makeup to music, game development to graphic

OCZ Gaming Unveils Streamer Sponsorship Program

Gaming is one of largest, if not becoming the largest form of entertainment, and last several years witnessed the rebirth of PC gaming, as gaming consoles cannot keep up with the system demands of new games. As such, the way to advertise to new audiences is shifting, with a barrier of entry becoming so attractive that anyone with the right mindset and dedication can do it. Over a decade ago, I met Jonathan Wendel, who went on to become a first pro-gamer to earn over a million dollars, and creating a successful collaboration with different hardware vendors with his ‘Fatal1ty’ brand (Abit, ASRock, Creative Labs, OCZ etc.). Now,

Report: Amazon Buying Out Twitch TV (Update)

Update: In a new blog post, Twitch CEO Emmett Shear revealed that Amazon has indeed acquired the game-streaming service. “Today, I’m pleased to announce we’ve been acquired by Amazon. We chose Amazon because they believe in our community, they share our values and long-term vision, and they want to help us get there faster. “We’re keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly our independence. But with Amazon’s support we’ll have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch.” A month ago Google was ready to buy up Twitch TV for the tune of $1 billion. Now it appears that

Google to Buy Twitch.tv for $1 billion in Cash?

Twitch.tv Logo

Some places are calling this new acquisition rumor of Twitch.tv to be one that has YouTube as a suitor and others are calling it a Google acquisition. Ultimately, Google is the parent company even though it would directly associate with YouTube in terms of media delivery and sharing. Whether you say YouTube is acquiring Twitch or Google, the end result is that Twitch is getting acquired for $1 billion in cash according to Variety, an interesting source of M&A news. While I would certainly allow this rumor to mature and ferment a bit in the rumormill, this may actually be the most reasonable acquisition (and acquisition price)
